From whence cometh the rust colored dust. Never from gold which cankereth not. Tis the beast, twisted with avarice, that rots away thus. The corpse ever seeketh the dust from which it formed. The spirit ever yearneth to possess the flame eternal. Trapped betwixt heaven and earth the corruption billoweth forth, red as blood.

You could point at a roughhewn table, a flock of pigeons, or the corpses of the Divine Multiplicity that litter the Red City and STILL that utterance would drip with as much truth as it does now.
Prolly not. I think Allison was able to do so not only because she accepted herself, but because she had a Key, so she could punch in the same metaphysical weight class.
I think it’s a combo of acceptance and will. Incubus was planting the seeds of self doubt and you can’t take on your stronger half, cuz you are weak. He seems the type to go for the ones that will let themselves be consumed and he was willing to take a gamble Alice was down and self hating enoghf to believe his bs on top of her own bs and become a power addict.
Actually, Incubus did seem to have an attitude of “you know this is going to blow up in our faces, don’t you?”
Come to think of it, I’m surprised Incubus didn’t pick on the boyfriend instead — from description, he would seem to be much more the Seducer’s type. For that matter, given all the tempations about, how much you want to bet that he comes out as a Little Bad?
Uther "Chaos Angel", Least of Jagganoth's Foreservants
I think her wounds provide a clear enough answer to that. Those we saw in the pit, they actually would die if they weren’t able to will themselves alive with Incubus’ help.
Incubus speaks true, all who accept his “gift” do so ultimately by their own agreement. Although their choices, like his, ultimately find themselves rooted in ever-unreasonable fear. Which is why he will slow Jagganoth, killer of fear, least of all when the time comes.
Well, that’s not terrifying at all. I love all the swords embedded in his neck. I think it’s safe to say cutting his throat is not the way to go. But perhaps she can use them as a ladder to reach his eyes. If she’s bold enough.
Why the eyes? does not their whiteness reveal that the monster is blind already?
Better to pity the crippled veteran of countless wars. No family to visit during the holidays. Hand outstretch for a bit of coin to ease the emptiness inside. Can you pass by without compassion?
Who would dare attack such as Mammon with a plebeian weapon? And no doubt over time they’ve all been encrusted with jewels and gold simply by impacting and aggregating the rest of his horde/ecology.
For some dragons, swords embedded into the hide are symbols of status. If a wurm should have that many blades, it proves it is a wurm that is feared. That they remain embedded, and the beast still alive, means the wurm is powerful enough to crush its enemies.
For a being as great and terrible as a dragon, collecting weapons lodged in the scales is as much Hoard-Making as the coin heaped in its den.
Oh, no, Cutting his throat works just fine. These idiots clearly were not masters of Cutting, however. Looks like a hack-job that a lot of people took a stab at.
ENTERING the dragon just might be the wrong approach to take here.
Most dragons are quite happy to have adventurers enter them, particularly if said adventurers have been seared first for a few seconds on each side to seal in the juices.
Al-Yisun re-discovers humanities foibles, each wound a kiss, a footstep on the journey from cradle to grave. It was this that gave her contrast between the life of king and commoner or so it is recorded.
Well that was quick. Hello there mister dragon.
And the wounds *reappear* when she stops healing them magically? Ouch.
Yeah, I think that the silver-haired and scarred Alison from the christmas break picture is the “canon” Alison for the next arc. I wonder how many scars she’ll have by the end.
To stand at the head of the hierarchy of being requires a truly Enlightened being. Achieving that Enlightenment requires no less than the scouring flame. The being passing into a crucible, that burns away all impurities. Until what once was lead – and was once putrefacted into dross – strides forth from the furnace shining and Gold. A being whose spirit alone acts as catalyst for effecting change upon the surrounding environs.
Any monarch who cannot claim to have endured this crucible is, at worst, a delusional pretender. At best, a steward, faithfully keeping the throne warm for True Royalty. Such is the way of things.
It seems our hero is going to have vanquish the dragon before rescuing our beloved Cio… A classic form of love story, yes?
However, gods like these don’t die easy. It’ll be interesting to see what our heroine can pull off here.
…Or maybe Yabalchoath will have to settle some scores.
You think Cio was the first or last to try to kill the Demiurge of Avarice? Dragons are there to be targets of proud and righteous knights. To have no enemies is a grave insult to dragon kind, as it implies the wurm is of so little importance as to be beneath the notice of warriors.
Therefore, I ask that you not insult Mammon’s honor by implying such. That is just rude.
The Young King’s intention to find her travelling companion gives me hope. But will the imp be willing to forgive? And will they find their prize of the false heir? And what of the dragon?
If she merged with her ambition, why has she lost it’s benefits? Shouldn’t the enormous ego-Alison that she made peace/love with be part of her now?
My thoughts exactly! Though I guess can I see Abbadon’s narrative intent, if she’s lost the deal’s benefits–we can’t let Allison control all that raw power yet, since her coming-of-age tale has yet to even reach its middle (if we’re to assume the midway point is Allsion realizing her boyfriend is NOT the prophesied King after all–which it might not be).
Still, I was kinda hoping at least SOME of that power-up juice would carry over. Maybe it did, but not noticeably so? I guess we’ll see soon enough.
Though the bones of their former owners do not last as long as their once-held steel, dragons will collect and adorn themselves with this metal. The collected steel of course does not last as long as the gold in the horde, glittering idly in the gloom where captured and lost among the scales of the beast. It’s still questionable if the gold in the horde lasts longer than the dragon or not, for the dragon must be slain first to see what happens to the gold.
Hence, the collected steel.
The treasure to be found is that of self unity. The dragon who guards it is fear. There are many weapons to fight the foe, compassion, understanding, and courage count among the finest.
Damnation. He of the Infinite Coffers is looking right majestic in that sort of way that gets my BLOODLUST all astir. I can’t wait until we get a proper introduction.
And I just fucking love how he hasn’t even deigned to notice the swords stuck in through his craw. How many of them are relics, I wonder, of enemies and loved ones from before he secluded himself in his treasure vault…
if he lives here why the fuck is his vault so inconvenient for him to walk through like…. even fucking smaug had enough space to move around and he stole his vault from a buncha much smaller people.

…A rising king.
Will she be found wanting? Is the metal of her heart, forged in internal and external conflict, pure enough?
Or is she a cheap alloy, poorly held together, ready to flake and crack off its latest polished coating to reveal a quintessentially debased and unworthy core beneath?
I now know exactly why I replaced every drop of my filthy organic blood with pure molten liquid gold, and the fetid meat of my heart with an orichalcum turbine all those years ago: so that when I am summoned to His awesome presence as a reward for being His most loyal servant, my own heart may be judged to be of the holiest of substance, consecrated by every drop with the stuff of avarice, every heartbeat proclaiming the divinity of Greed.
Uther "Chaos Angel", Least of Jagganoth's Foreservants
Assuming she survives the dragon, at this point I think the only way she’s going to get Cio to forgive her is with some serious demon / human makeouts.
Speaking of makeouts, you’d think mastering her Incubus side would have given her access to SOME of the powers of the Key. There’s no shortcut in defeating a monster in your own head.
I wonder if Allison tries to run and is met at the other side by a transformed Cio now in a Yabalchoath type form. She was not killed, but like the demon in the fight used will power to transform herself into something more powerful
So see here, a mundane maiden from the City of the Angels. Frail and wounded, but doubt not that she bears within her brow the Key of Kings and within her breast the soul of Saint George.
No Alison, you were always healing the human way, the personality change just allowed you to ignore the problem.
I am going to state a guess here: the big dragon/Mammon we have always seen is an illusion – the real one hasn’t grown at all. If you buy into the illusion it becomes real enough to kill you (and a wielder of one of the seven keys is powerful enough anyway). Remember that Yabalchoath got away with a key, but not the memory of the vault, which indicates that protecting information about the vault was more important than a magus key. So if it isn’t Mammon’s size that is misrepresented, then there is some other critical weakness of Mammon that Alison can figure out now that she is actually in the vault.
It seems Lord Mammon has indeed grown as great as his Greed. One might spy that his underside bears the signs of many heroes who have long since died. Perhaps a simple stomach strike won’t suffice to slay as with some substantial serpents from fantasy.
I’d like to point out that, aside from some serious issues with his relatives, we have no real reason to consider Mammon a villain at all. Certainly not compared to Mottom, or, for that matter the demon robber crew (aside from Cio and, more or less, Alison) who are basically the aggressors here.
Behold: the divine corpse.
Could any of Incubus’ ‘victims’ reverse the change by accepting themselves for who they are?
Prolly not. I think Allison was able to do so not only because she accepted herself, but because she had a Key, so she could punch in the same metaphysical weight class.
Maybe Inky hoofed it because of who was a-comin!

Just act naturally and he’ll think you’re loot.
Well, wee lass from Los Angeles.
Here be a dragon.
Lesse ya kill it.
Well, that’s not terrifying at all. I love all the swords embedded in his neck. I think it’s safe to say cutting his throat is not the way to go. But perhaps she can use them as a ladder to reach his eyes. If she’s bold enough.

Eyes may be the easiest way to the brain. Unless his brain resides in his rump.
Only the finest of swords, mind you.
Who would dare attack such as Mammon with a plebeian weapon? And no doubt over time they’ve all been encrusted with jewels and gold simply by impacting and aggregating the rest of his horde/ecology.

“Gotta find Cio and get out of here.” Did you forget that you left Cio trapped under rubble? Or were you not watching the EyeTV when that happened?
She was a bit busy at the time going “by my personality traits combined,” so she might not be entirely clear on some details.
I will allow myself to be the first to say:
Oh Fuck
That moment when you realize that when they say we’re going to fight a dragon, it means WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT A FUCK-MOTHERING DRAGON.
Who’s this “DOM” guy they are talking about?
I think it’s part of the engine browsers use to display webpages: https://i.imgur.com/xFR3W4E.png
Also remember to be wary of dragons if you are flammable and taste good with bbq sauce.
Eventually the one on top.
Hmm… There is only one DOM that is worthy of such repeated mention in these circumstances: The Captain of Chaos himself.

That is quite a number of swords, and appear to be recent (they weren’t there in Cio’s flashback). Did Yabalchoath do that?
I don’t think flashbacks are supposed to be taken “literally”; Especially with that one being from a loosely-remembered previous incarnation.
Also, it has been quite a while…
You think Cio was the first or last to try to kill the Demiurge of Avarice? Dragons are there to be targets of proud and righteous knights. To have no enemies is a grave insult to dragon kind, as it implies the wurm is of so little importance as to be beneath the notice of warriors.
Therefore, I ask that you not insult Mammon’s honor by implying such. That is just rude.
Those swords in Mammon’s neck look awfully climbable. Take note, Al-Yis-Un.
The Young King’s intention to find her travelling companion gives me hope. But will the imp be willing to forgive? And will they find their prize of the false heir? And what of the dragon?
This is troubling. I worry for the Young King.
If she merged with her ambition, why has she lost it’s benefits? Shouldn’t the enormous ego-Alison that she made peace/love with be part of her now?
She always was.
Just… I think she might be slightly outnumbered by the insecure and/or sexy Alisons.
Ah, but Crippling Self-Doubt is probably keeping Ambition close company.
I imagine making peace with herself also rid her of Incubus’ influence and power.
I’m sure this is fine.

And I just fucking love how he hasn’t even deigned to notice the swords stuck in through his craw. How many of them are relics, I wonder, of enemies and loved ones from before he secluded himself in his treasure vault…
Also: I undersized Mammon in my first attempt at a kill six billion urists dwarf fortress mod.
Well the dragon seems blind, and possible unable to smell as well, that might be a good way to survive.
Man he’s old to.
Alternative title for the comic: “Violent vagrant assaults seven geriatrics”
Fuck considering how he has a bunch of swords in his throat how often does Yre get heisted? Should invest in better security.
And so the dragon rears its head, gazing upon all its hoard with blind eyes.
Thats a nice doggo
Maybe I am stupid, but I don’t think Mammon will fight her.
Also he is freaking huge. I kinda half expected his size to be overstated, but here we are.
Unlike the other kings Mammon did not leave Throne to rule; he has remained with his treasure in the presence where devils and angels grow swollen.
And he has not likely angels in his body.
Wouldn’t Cio be back through the water? Where you left her?
Re: the dragon, I’m told you’re looking for a bare patch on his underbelly. Hope you brought a black arrow or two.
Alternatively, raise your sword to catch the light of the sun and hope his weak points start glowing.
You’re at the edge of the map now, Allison
Here there be monsters
Even as a pincushion you are severly outranked now girl
Oh, dear, another dogged contender.
AL-YISUN reclaims her divine humanity just in time to wish she hadn’t
if he lives here why the fuck is his vault so inconvenient for him to walk through like…. even fucking smaug had enough space to move around and he stole his vault from a buncha much smaller people.
Daikaiju! 😀 Finally we see him not in flashback and glimpse his current size. Quite an impressive son of a snake.
I…think he’s blind. His eyes look pale, it seems like he has cataracts. Poor old bastard.
Also, her wounds bleed again because their healing was a delusion crafted by Incubus to last only while she was useful, methinks
I don’t think that was a delusion. Rather, Alice wanted to be strong and therefore didn’t allow herself to bleed.
Seriously though holy mother of crap he looks scary.

I hate to be the one to tell you, but liter for liter, scorpion venom is about ten times more valuable than liquid gold…
Damn, I wish we could edit comments.
Is that glowing khopesh-shape a part of his halo? Or another sword, one of such great puissance that it simply appears to be made of holy fire?
Tis a sword to cut worlds!
I’ve heard it said that dragons are fond of riddles!
Perhaps Allison: the unchosen; statue rider; defeat drinker; hand layer; lover of self, can buy herself some time?
My claws Spears, my teeth swords, my scales Shields, my wings hurricanes, and my breath is Death
…look at those swords, like cocktail picks. That is one MASSIVE dragon.
I think Mammon is blinded by cataracts, see the paleness of his eyes?
He was blinded long before, by ambition and greed
I’m hopeful that we’ll get some philosophical conversation out of Mammon, like we did with Mottom.
The golden heap, engraved with loam.
what weary eye would see death in this vault?
It occurs to me that our prior visions of Mammon lacked a certain sense of scale.
That’s one big boy!
Well, to be fair, he was much smaller earlier. Like, human-sized, when they were a disciple of the first king.

Assuming she survives the dragon, at this point I think the only way she’s going to get Cio to forgive her is with some serious demon / human makeouts.
Or maybe I’m just being hopeful, I dunno.
One can only hope.
Impressive how he never throws those swords away. Very thrifty.
those swords look so climbable. It’s like freakin, tantalising.
Hey question: this here dragon critter was originally one of “the Gentle People”, and still had the same body form AFAICT.
So why do the Gentle People have teeth like crocs? Coz that’s not seeming particularly gentle, if ya know what I mean.
And I still want to know where the cat is.
Cool dragon though.

Without consistent control of her divine strength, Ali will have to rely on her words to buy time and placate the dragon.
So she’s getting eaten here, isn’t she?
So see here, a mundane maiden from the City of the Angels. Frail and wounded, but doubt not that she bears within her brow the Key of Kings and within her breast the soul of Saint George.
Hah. The Dragonslayer need not be called.
Behold a dead god, and pity him.
This one wonders if there is any significance to Allison adding what was left of her jacket to the pile.
Behold! A dragon descends from up above and besets the party! Be not full of sorrow however, for this great beast appears to be blind!
Don’t leace the jacket behind! It’s awesome!
Getting some good Dark Souls vibes here.
To be fully human is to bear the marks of one’s wounds, as the true God knows.
His security is too good, those swords were put there by himself. Probably needed good neck scratch is all :p
Blind Avarice God,
About to see a mighty,
Human Pincushion.
Is that… is that a *village* in square 4 and 5? O.o
Can I say how much I love the framing of Mammon, here? He’s so vast that his sound effects can’t even fit into the page.
She has bested the Dragon Within, Self. Will she best the Dragon Without?
It seems Lord Mammon has indeed grown as great as his Greed. One might spy that his underside bears the signs of many heroes who have long since died. Perhaps a simple stomach strike won’t suffice to slay as with some substantial serpents from fantasy.
I’d like to point out that, aside from some serious issues with his relatives, we have no real reason to consider Mammon a villain at all. Certainly not compared to Mottom, or, for that matter the demon robber crew (aside from Cio and, more or less, Alison) who are basically the aggressors here.
Quite the predicament; wounded, alone and facing a Wielder of a Key. Pay attention, this is how legends are born
