I’m looking forward to the sounds that Abaddon invents to describe the pieces of Incubus coming back together. Something like “thwuck” times ten thousand.
More blood for the blood god.
A good start Maya. Will it be enough ?
I wonder if even Hachi-wari would be enough.
We’ve seen Incubus regenerate from losing face and getting stabbed.
Just how far will that old Blood Magick go ?
“And if you sign up for Mega-Bloody-Revival, then you can come back from being mashed into a puddle !”
“What’s the catch ?”
“PAIN, PAIN, PAIN – and ya gotta have a couple thousand blood and chi sacrifices ready to go at a moment’s notice.”
“I’m DOWN for that !”
…I’m a little surprised it took me until now to see parallels with Chainsaw Man in this. Similarities between Incubus and Denji, I guess.
Both are, in some ways, relentless in their ambitions. Both are very used to going hungry. Both can heal from absurdly violent injuries. And both seem masochistic, in a way — like when Incubus shaved his head, seeming ecstatic in the face of pain.
Not really enough for me to say they’re similar to each-other, but it’s still interesting how much they have in common.
For all those saying “Look at all those cuts”, you have lost the sense and purpose of Cutting.
A continuous motion.
Incubus is a poor swordsman because every move, every strike, every cut is wrapped in thousands of layers of thought and emotion and purpose outside of the Cut. It clouds his purpose and makes his blade dull, so that even ten strikes to the head cannot decapitate a foe.
Observe. With one Cut, her blade strikes ten times and strikes cleanly through. With one motion she Kills the Gods and Topples their Thrones. Her foe is sundered within a blink far beyond every effort they could inflict. Isshun Sengeki, one motion, a thousand blows.
Each must be singular in its beauty, no matter how many precede it. You must make your enemies weep with admiration, and likewise should your head be shorn off by such an object of beauty, you must do your best to shed tears of respect.
Yeah, Maya’s following that philosophy very well, really.
Although…it’s not like she’s fighting completely without thought or emotion — there’s visible emotion in her expression, right? Looks like frustration to me.
And if the most effective way to cut is with nothing clouding your mind, your will…the angels, embodying emptiness itself, should generally be flawless with that, right?
Which didn’t stop Zoss, who himself admits to having had plenty of pride and ambition on his mind, from…well, being the conquering king.
If thoughts and emotions can cloud someone’s will, like how the air itself can slow a vehicle via friction — well, the air can also give propulsion, whether through sails or turbines. Overthinking how to kill an opponent might distract from simply doing it…but having something to fight for got Allison this far, allowed Jagganoth to stand against all the other Demiurges at once, and gave Solomon David the strength to briefly rival Jagganoth on his own — I feel like that’s worth something. And that’s not even considering fear being a strength for Het, and without considering Aesma’s emotional volatility.
Even looking at YIS and UN being equals, there’s definitely more nuance than Meti’s teachings on fighting without thought actually grasp.
Which isn’t to criticise Maya. On the contrary, my disagreement with her philosophy, is exactly why I don’t think the emotions she’s displaying here are going to hold her back. As long as she knows not to repress herself, anyway.
As for Incubus? Definitely feels like there’s something holding him back, that his thoughts and emotions aren’t on his side here. Question is, what exactly it is.
Looking at what he’s saying, if his focus isn’t on the fight, it’s on pushing Maya to confront and/or return to her past — which she can’t do so easily if she’s dead. And he can’t cut to kill, if what he wants right now requires her to live. Maybe it’s as simple as that?
Your argument seems to miss an important point. Cutting without thought and emotion behind it, with singular devotion is the art of cutting. But it doesn’t say it’s anything more than that. You’re trying to dismantle it as if cutting was the only thing in the world as if its principles were all encompassing. It isn’t even the only combat art. Maybe Zoss wasn’t so good at cutting…
To quote some Snooker commentary – “Oh, and that’s a bad miss.”
Anything less than destroying Incubus’ head, which may or may not be possible given his use of the Head of John technique, isn’t likely to put him down permanently.
What she needs to do is grab his head and thrust it into a barrel of salt, drawing out all the blood. That would be difficult to recover from, even for the head of John.
It seems his pathetic appearance before the other Demiurges was a sham. Look to his sword. At the conclave he brought a dull and broken sword. But it was not his sword. His true sword was his blood.
And it will come
Like a flood of pain
Pouring down on me
And it will not let up
Until the end is here
And it will come
Through the darkest day
In my final hour
And it will never rest
Until the clouds are clear
Until it finds my dreams have disappeared
Well, he’s been disarmed.
Also dislegged, and disribbed, and disnecked, and discrotched.
I’m looking forward to the sounds that Abaddon invents to describe the pieces of Incubus coming back together. Something like “thwuck” times ten thousand.
He’s a Head of John user, this wasn’t lethal until the studs break.
Why do I got a sneakin suspicion he WILL in fact be just fine.
Splurtch.
That does not seem to be the expression of one who believes they have been cut…
oh no Auntie no that was way way more than one cut
More blood for the blood god.
A good start Maya. Will it be enough ?

She finally did it. She cut him down.

Auntie gonna be thinking in a second “Why do I still hear boss music?”
Ten blows zero cuts meets one blow six cuts

he’s gonna slurp back together and pull some bullshit second phase with a water fowl dance moveset, i can already feel it coming
John’s got some crazy head game
In-cubes-is
im the only one who used to thought incubus was blind outside the dream zone?
It seems his pathetic appearance before the other Demiurges was a sham. Look to his sword. At the conclave he brought a dull and broken sword. But it was not his sword. His true sword was his blood.
So fell Incubus the bladed devil.
i’m in love with the fact that she managed to cut him into seven or eight pieces and yet his hair is totally untouched.
It looks like these two have a lot of history..
Also, did Maya loose her left arm in the last panel? A very clean cut if that’s the case!
It’s just her bare shoulder; you can see her left hand beside her right arm. Looking back, her left sleeve has been torn for a few panels.
Nothing is for sure when you cut with the Maybe Sword. Probably best to chop his head in eight pieces and tear that key out.
If we want to get pedantic, I think that might be more than one cut.
Looks like more than one cut.
And it will come
Like a flood of pain

Hold up, we’re getting the judges in here to rule on whether this still counts as one cut.
“All right, we’ll call it a draw”
