Well Maya did not bequeath the power of the key upon Incubus. And I doubt that Solomon is nihilistically saying “none of my efforts and goals matter, I quit”. Seems like Solomon was thinking, “Clearly this angel person can do something I cannot / will not do”. I think that he saw someone who could unite his people, create a weakness in an insurmountable foe, and someone who could change (very dramatically at that).
Though I would love to see Maya and Solomon have a “you gave up infinite power and lived to tell the tale?” moment.
Solomon is also seeking even greater enlightenment and may have seen that his key and his empire was just holding him back. As soon as he found someone he could plausibly dump that responsibility off on he jumped off the demiurge track because he knew it was a losing game.
Feels like a be a bit of both. He feels he’s no longer worthy to hold the mantle of ruler/realizes how much of a cage he has built for himself and how much he himself stagnated as Emperor. But at the same time, he also sees WC as the only being possibly worthy of succeeding his power. He saw what his style of ruling got him when the Red Death came, and decided that if his road led to ruin, then he might as well give his Key to someone who he deems worthy of acknowledgment, who may just be able to succeed where he failed and use her own methods to bring about a stable peace he could not, even if he himself doesn’t fully understand what makes her so special.
He’s like “Oh now you’ve done it, you think I should share my power with those around me? Here, here’s my power if you want it so badly” like yeah genius, that was the idea
It’s nice to see White Chain embrace femininity. After seeing how the other angels persecuted for so displaying any kind of humanity, White Chain can finally just be true to their internal experience and their sense of duty to others.
I’d love to see what the rest of the angels think of White Chain’s body, presentation, and station.
Opposites: Jagganoth forgot “the warmth of bread taken from the hearth”, (and humanity) in his fight against injustice. Now White Chain has discovered humanity and the goodness of food on the same mission.
