King of Swords 10-166
“Once, Lord Intra came to the Vale of Stalks. It was a broad land with a hardy and beautiful people that wove stems of grass into elaborate mats. There were frequent harvest songs and offerings to the God of Pigs.
Unfortunately, at the time, the people were starving. The land was ruled by Yem Yeddo and his family, who had sucked the life out of it for some time. That was the way of things in those days. Though the soil was quite fertile, Yem Yeddo had surrounded himself with thickset and well-fed men, who lacked in brains but made up for it in muscle and the same kind of canniness found in very smart dogs. These men he used as tax collectors, and he drained the land of every third, fourth, and fifth bale of crop, and sold it for crude coin, feeding the scraps to his thugs.
Lord Intra arrived at the local way house and was served black bread, as was the custom, but skesh was strangely absent, and the bread was thin and mealy. When Intra asked why, he quickly learned of the lands’ plight.
“What of the peregrine lords that tend this place?” He asked.
“They were killed by thirty men, and hung from a tree for seven days,” said the inn proprietor, with a look like a beaten animal.
Intra could not abide this. He called out to Yem Yeddo in the spare and decaying market square, who brought his thirty men.
“Preem Yeddo,” bellowed Intra, “You are a cruel and petty man. How can you scour this land so and not feel for the people that call it their abode?”
Yem Yeddo laughed. “Let them eat the stones, for all I care,” said he.
Intra, who was not one to balk at such matters, picked up a particularly large rock and said, “So it shall be. I shall feed the people with this stone.”
– The Song of Maybe
SHE LOOKS SO HAPPY OH MY GOD!!!
I’m absolutely living for the White Chain smiles in this chapter
Her little freckles!!! 😀
I am absolutely screaming
that smile
my everything is melting again
halp
She’s sparkling joy!
I did not need to worry, it seems. Apparently she is still an angel.
“Check my sweet new meat suit!”
Yep, is good that she is happy.
LISTEN HERE ABADDON YOU LITTLE BEAUTIFUL MAN I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THIS OK? I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR RELIEF OR HAPPINESS ONLY TO DEATH AND VIOLENCE! THANK YOU SIR I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT NOW
ā i screm for this and i resound with it.
Still plenty of time for death and violence
We need a pretext, though. Did we ever find out whether or not Gog Agog can emulate individuals they haven’t consumed? That is to say, how certain are we that Zade hasn’t been nommed as part of a long con?
considering that one time immortabitch zapped her head off and gog agog said “i was still working on that face!” or some such while holding a hand mirror, i think it is safe to say that said shapeshifting ability is based purely on what she can see then subsequent repeats being based on the feel of making said face. this would imply that she had been prepping said face (and thus said plan) for some time before actually popping in on Allison and co.
While White Chain may have given up her angelic form, it appears she has acquired so, so much more.
An existence of stone did not suit her.
I object in no uncertain terms, sir, to the idea that White Chain no longer possesses an angelic form.
Well, her form is quite heavenly I must say.
BECOME HEAVENLY THROUGH VIOLENCE
I have a big poster in my living room.
The poster is one I photoshopped myself.
It’s a single symbol.
The Brotherhood of NOD.
And I agree with you.
white CHAIN LIVES
*STOMP* *STOMP*
To hoping she’s as resilient as our fiery Primarch
everything went better than expected
… and then, the Subversion Nation attacked.
Preem Prost-Phet, cruel mistrix, in that case we will resort to preserving White Chain in an iceflow for 200 years.
Except they would be expecting that, because they would subvert that storyline.
🙂
Set down your burden of ash and clay, that you may enter joyfully into Paradise.
WHY DOES THAT SMILE FILL ME WITH SO MUCH JOY?!? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME ABBADON!?!?!?!
AAAARGH I’M FEEEEEELING
Do you feel that, Pazuto?
That
Is the power of the Feel Side of the Force.
Second to last panel faces: “Oh no she’s hot”
Kio is 300% already planning the threesome by that panel
… implying this was not her intent when Chain was a stoneyarse anyways.
Angels (usually) have no genitals. One wonders if they are even capable of physical ecstacy.
the stony ones almost certainly aren’t but White Chain, having a squishy fleshy body now, should be able to as she seems to have incarnated as baseline human… well, i say baseline… i highly doubt she has baseline human strength plus whatever the hell bonuses having an angel soul in a sorta-human body are. faster than normal regeneration? ridiculous longevity even without a key? ability to still perform angel-only martial arts? WE SHALL SEEEEE…
Even if she is actually baseline, she is still a baseline human in a setting where baseline humans can learn incredibly powerful martial arts that allow them to achieve superhuman feats, and she still has centuries of experience. Lest we forget, several demiurges started as baseline humans, as far as I can tell.
D’you ever wonder how people with paralysis of all four limbs and deprived of sensation in all of their body but, say, their heads, can enjoy sexuality?
I just mean, hands and lips are more than enough. Many times.
As the disembodied head of Giant Robot Abraham Lincoln said to this question, “Clearly you don’t read Cosmo.”
Bless Sam and Max.
I sur hope so, as my poster print of 9-116 needs a counterpiece.
SHE SMILED!!!!! SHE! SMILED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 💖😭💖
All is right with the Multiverse.
GOD IS NOT IN HIS HEAVEN
ALL IS RIGHT IN ALL THE WORLDS
HOLY SHIT IT’S CUTE WHAT A PAGE
Woohoo! Everyone is still alive! And White Chain is smiling!
Also, Cio apparently changed into her other dress?
The Red Art of Lying to the Multiverse has to do with change. She could transform anything into what ever clothing she pleases.
the smile when she says “it’s me”…
my heart is on fire, i love her so so much
What a time to be alive
Quite literally for White Chain!
TRANS!! FUCKING!! RIGHTS!!!
Don’t you mean ‘Womans rights’ young one? as much as my brothers may call themselves by male honorifics, our kind are very much genderless beings, she was never male in the first place so your labels of Trans are not really accurate.
Now if you shall excuse me I must get back to dealing with these thrice-be-damned worms that keep trying to interfere with the tournaments aftermath.
Ok boomer
All that is needed to qualify is a changing of status, and preferring the new state to the old. Going from agender to female certainly counts as transing one’s gender.
And, perhaps, those who have no interest in undergoing such a change should be cautious about lecturing others on the topic.
It doesn’t though does it. She’s been portrayed as feminine through the entire strip and now she’s been made flesh and female blood.
She’s been portrayed as identifying as feminine. Her body has been portrayed as male or genderless, and she’s been mocked by her peers for thinking she can be anything but male coded.
Not only did her body not fit her identity, nor did her peers acknowledge her, the underlying implication is she wasn’t conceived of as female, I mean she wasn’t even acknowledged as it by most other angels for the entirety so far.
Ignoring her body’s appearance, is the argument that she was more like an intersex person than a trans person, simply born outside the gender norm of her race? Which, wouldn’t really hold up for varying reasons, but I’m curious where you’re coming from on this one.
Cis women aren’t something the angels appear to have at all. Whether they have men is kinda debatable too, I guess? But either way- well, I’ll need to know what exactly you stand for.
Just because someone’s been trans as long as you’ve known them wouldn’t make them not trans somehow, anyways. She existed as a character before she was first shown in the series.
Its worth noting Fari that the default way Angels interact with the world is through a male lens. Its only in their realm that they take their true forms, or when shit is getting real. Also, while her story is not 1 to 1 with a transwoman’s story, she’s been consistently coded as a trans woman in a society that assumes masculine
@75 Fearfully Delays the Fetid Worms: Someone doesn’t understand the concept of coding. Saying the angels are genderless is like saying the gems in Steven Universe are genderless. It involves completely ignoring that, just like the gems in SU are routinely and consistently presented with aesthetic, dialogue, and other signifiers of womanhood, the angels in KSBD have been consistently presented as using male pronouns, having masculine forms and bodies, and treating feminine coding amongst their kind as a form of deviancy. With pretty much the only feminine coded angels encountered being relevant to White Chain’s character arc as a trans-woman. (6 Juggernaut Star, for example, serves as her foil. Hiding her feminine form and kowtowing to her oppressors rather than standing up to fight them)
Also, @AAAAAAA, hell yeah. TRANS!! FUCKING!! RIGHTS!!! WOOT!
Trans women were never male in the first place either, society just decided they were.
This right here ^^^^^^ thank you for stating that which has been needed saying
I’m all for letting people transition, but male/female are useful biological categories based on observable features.
They are useful for generalizations, but often the reliance upon gendered stereotypes and an insistence on binarism harms people. The full spectrum of sexual characteristics (ie chromosomal makeup, hormone levels, genital and gonadal configuration, etc) deserve more attention than they often receive after an individual has been placed into a shorthand box of “male” or “female”. Moreover, while the majority of people are cisgender, it is still harmful to transgender people to assume everyone is cis until proven otherwise.
Not all intersex people are comfortable with being included in LGBT+ spaces, but they deserve a seat at the table if they want one.
Very well said.
Thank you.
Only in medical settings. Gender and genitalia don’t necessarily categorize one’s identity. Yes, it can be difficult to throw away preconceived notions of sexuality, but every person’s brain can have nuances of preference, identity, and gender. I’m sure having one’s body not match up to the brain’s hard-wired parameters is difficult as it is without someone else deciding who and what you are.
Sex determines a person’s role in reproduction, one of the most important aspects of human life, it’s not simply a medical category. My response above was only to say that most transwomen were born with indisputably male bodies, which is the only way it can be determined. Whether or not brains actually come hard-wired as male or female is an open question, I think, and I am personally doubtful.
The fact that we use the words male/female to describe both gender expression and what chromosomes or organs we have is pretty terrible. Maybe someday we’ll have language to talk about bodies that doesn’t come with so much baggage. Maybe we’ll have a concept of gender that has nothing to do with our bodies. That would be cool as hell.
I also think people really overestimate the effect of sex and underestimate the effect of social conditions on personal identity and behavior. I feel like being treated like a boy had an immense impact on my development growing up, and it’s wild to me that we act like that socialization is a fact of life or some sort of biological reality. “Boys will be boys” and all that.
I get that reproduction is like, important for keeping humanity alive and shit, but I wouldn’t call it “one of the most important aspects of human life”. Like, if I were to list off reasons that the human race is unique or interesting as compared to other life, our ability to reproduce would not be on that list. It actually strikes me as an incredibly shallow thing to base your identity on. I would also say that the roles parents play in raising children can be incredibly fluid and varied, if not the actual conception and birthing of children.
+100 Agrees. Genitalia really should not be the defining factor for our social roles and self-identification. Even ignoring some of the TERF rhetoric we’ve seen in this comment section, an essentialist focus on biology has long been the founding pillar for racism, misogyny, and evils like eugenics. It doesn’t get humans anywhere to try to put people into boxes based on what their bodies look like.
Hell, plenty of cisgender people defy the genitalia based boxes that patriarchy tries to put them in. My mother for example, was a West Point grad and US Army Officer with a technical background in computers, and in her civilian professional life has been a forceful, stereotype defying presence. IN her personal life, she did things like the home repairs more typically associated by our culture with fathers. Meanwhile my father (also an army officer), was heavily into fashion, the one who owned a ton of shoes, and did the cleaning and cooking in our home.
We should, as a society, embrace the directions that trans and non-binary folks are taking us. There’s really something quite transhumanist to it all. Defying not just patriarchal social norms about how someone with certain body parts should act, but defying the very idea that we’re destined to have those body parts and those body parts only. Protecting and enshrining the rights of trans and non-binary people ultimately helps everyone, by making a society where we can truly be our best selves instead of having to perform to a role assigned by the patriarchy.
We croak thanks to thee and chirp in delight over thy reply. We craw and concur.
I thought the distinct terms were girl/boy/woman/man for social presentation and female/male for biology? That’s how I’m using it anyway. I don’t think we’ll get away from associating gender with sex, mostly because no human society has. Sexual dimorphism in body and behavior is pretty strong in mammals, humans included. That doesn’t preclude acceptance of people who don’t follow the common path. And socialization does play a bigger role for humans than other mammals, so I won’t totally rule out the possibility.
But I do stand by the importance of reproduction. Having children is easily one of the most significant events and raising them one of the most meaningful experiences in most people’s lives. I didn’t mean it distinguished humans from other animals, maybe “aspects of human life” was not the best choice of words.
Even in medical settings, the notion of gender often creates more harm than good. For example, doctors consistently underestimate women’s pain symptoms, and diagnosis and treatment for women are often delayed as a result. So if gender became *less* relevant in that instance, it would benefit patients. And being misgendered in a medical setting is just as damaging to psychological health as being misgendered anywhere else– and, as the brain is part of the body, damage to your psychological health is damage to your body.
Really, a more useful set of categories would be “has vagina” (with subcategory “with/without uterus” and “with/without ovaries”) and “has penis” (subcategory “with/without testes”) and various hormone levels, so those things could be considered when they’re necessary for medical context.
I’m glad this came up! I was actually wondering just this morning what the trans folks on the forum were thinking about WC’s transformation. On the one hand, angels are technically not gendered, so does it really ‘count’ as much as an emotionally identifiable experience and victory? On the other hand, it definitely feels like there’s a strong assumption of male identity being assigned to the angels – and even if there wasn’t, WC being told that her assumption of any gendered identity was wrong seems to be the same rotten deal that trans people have to deal with. Based on the comments here, it ‘counts’ in terms of it being an experience that can be identified with.
So, thanks for the discussion. Any day that ends with me being less of an ignoramus is a good day.
As a trans-person myself, WC’s arc has been fantastically enjoyable for me.
As for the angels, while the angels are technically “sexless” they are what we’d call male “Coded.” Meaning that they are drawn, written, and designed in ways that invoke our cultural ideas of maleness. Even if a character is technically a sexless pile of nuclear fire in ashen armor, they can be endowed by their authors with a perceivable gender through coding. The way the angels respond to the WC’s ladyhood is also a classic example of toxic masculinity, which manipulates cisgender men into bullying their cisgender brothers and transgender sisters into living out a very circumscribed gender performance.
If you would like a good, non-KSBD example of coding look at the character of Garnet within Steven Universe. Garnet is, in SU’s lore, a sexless, genderless gemstone person. But she is coded as a black woman. She has an afro, dark skin, a feminine figure and voice, and is motherly towards the namesake protagonist of the series. Even if she isn’t technically a black woman, audiences perceive her as such, at least subconsciously, through her coding. The coding is a part of her character and design, and it can’t simply be ignored, neither by her authors nor her audience.
Trans rights ARE women’s rights!
TRANS!! FUCKING!! RIGHTS!!
FUCK YEAH
O the joy on our sister’s face, the gentle hand of our brother on her newly born shoulder. In centuries I have not felt such hope.
I agree dear 46 Radiant, we can only hope the Knights of Thorns and the festering fake smile of those worms do not twist this moment for their own ends, we must remain vigilant.
We love to see it. Now I’m ready for them to briefly discuss her transformation and then not seek any explanation.
Cio: DUDE, MY GIRLFRIEND IS RIGHT HERE, STOP BEING HOT
Sooooo… did Solomon just take off his pants and throw them back at White Chain for her to use as an impromptu robe?
I mean, it sorta looks like that to me.
That’s 10 Vigilant Gaze’s cape/cloak!
Don’t spoil my image of Solomon walking off of the stage in front of his whole country butt naked.
Stupid, sexy Solomon XDDD
That would be the third time this week he’s pulled this stunt… why do you think they call him “SALAMI David?”
How brave to be oneself
YOurs?
This is literally a win for everyone involved. Even Solitude Dave over there will be lauded as a godlike figure who literally punched an Angel into a flesh-and-blood woman.
That sort of makes him the only being to ever kill an angel.
One is pleased and expected Vigilant would be the gentleaeon.
And one is still struck by how pretty the face of our renewed sister.
The *sparkles* <3
This one definitely sparks joy ^^
My Former Angel Sensei Can’t Be This Cute
I have just one question…
during all of this…
WAS IT SOLOMON THE ONE WHO MADE IT RAIN AND THEN STOP RAINING JUST FOR ADDED DRAMA???
My theory is that it is less that he made it rain and more he stopped making it not rain. Ki Rata is a style that requires perfect concentration, and when he invoked it against White Chains, he did not have concentration to spare for keeping the skies fair. Now that the fight is over, his concentration has resumed.
Well, he was certainly the one who cracked the glass ceiling for his opponent’s benefit.
And that does add a sense of irony to the symbolism of this page’s scenery: he is defeated, the purple sky is as cracked as he is and a blue sky shines through.
He allowed this.
Thank you Prost-Phet, one was as caught up as most in the more explicit happenings to the fore. He even took her through the cracked glass ceiling. All the symbolism and metaphor you mention is lovely to observe. One raises a dram to your insight and acuity. And remiss if not have another also, for the fecund mind that placed it there for our delectation.
I love that word, delectation. Let’s have some tea!
*clink!*
have you ever seen a woman so beautiful you started crying
