Oh Oskar, you just showed up and you’re already stirring our heads with your nice coat and interesting implications.
Considering Cio’s seemingly* small amount of names for a blue devil, I’m inclined to believe she was once a greater demon since diminished back to blue.
White Chain sought Cio out because she is apparently the only one to have ever successfully stolen a Key Of Kings, but she evidently doesn’t have the key still, and we don’t have any further context. Which begs the question of the aftermath. Is it possible she was lessened (perhaps from gold or green even) as a punishment when she was caught?
*At least according to quotes from the treaty/manual on demons that we were seeing at the start of the chapter.

So Cio wasn’t always a blue? Wonder how high she got, and how she fell.
Ever since we got the rundown on demon colors I’d been wondering why she was so much larger and more complex than the other blues we’ve seen. Most other blues so far have just been little naked imps. Guess this maybe explains it?
Well if you look in the panels above, you see that the first two verses actually provides evidence for this. The little blue devil aspires to go from blue to red to green to yellow to black. But the red devil below sings a sorrowful tale of having been a feared yellow devil, before circumstance unknown reduced them to red again.
The first singer reiterated the proper order of progression, while the second illustrates that devils may regress. These both allow Oskar’s comment about Cio’s color to have greater impact.
That is some good storytelling, especially since not all readers might have read or remember the descriptions about devil colors from before.
I’ve been wondering the same. Maybe you’re right? I also wonder whether femininity and masculinity might be tied to the various stages. A lot of the blue and gold devils appear pretty feminine, while the red and green seem more masculine (I dunno, maybe that’s just because they’re more bestial)?
Is that a family resemblance I detect? Or just a similar taste in masks and cancer sticks? Oscar’s been around, I bet he has relatives out there.
I’m eager to learn how and why Cio got demoted. (It certainly explains her crankiness and impatience, and puts a big question mark on her motives.) What I have no desire to know is the ingredient list for Lymphatic Sweet Wine. And neither does Allison, clearly…
P.S. All comics should henceforth serve their exposition as booze-fueled musical interludes. Actually, everything should. Sing, don’t tell!
This is highly informatics, crisp and clear. I think that everything has been described in systematic manner so that reader could get maximum information and learn many things.
I really thank you for the valuable info on this great subject and look forward to more great posts. Thanks a lot for enjoying this beauty article with me. I am appreciating it very much! Looking forward to another great article. Good luck to the author! All the best!
I already don’t like Oskar.
Thoughts for the modern noble:
Any adventurer of worth is likely to acquire deadly enemies, irritating acquaintances and problematic friends.
It is important that one keeps tabs on such folk to be informed of what tag currently applies and to shield against inconvenient surprise.

I honestly liked it better when demons didn’t have a strict evolutionary line through their masks and were more individual.

I’m talking note of this.
You shall know that it is you who placed the great doom on the future.
And with the satisfaction of your words I shall weave horrible wonders.
Did anyone else read those lyrics to the tune of the Whose Line Is It Anyway hoedown music?
Always thought Cio was a bit big for a blue devyl
All this exposition on colors and ranks makes me feel as though a KSBD and Homestuck crossover is all too possible.
Love the shit-eating grin on Cio and the “oh shi-” reaction of the last two panels.
… Possible Cio used to be a higher colour I guess?
fuck this shit fuck everything i need more
Dark Crystal and Labyrinth meet in a pub in Hell!
Love it!
Magic paper doll drinking aid or not, she must be getting pretty Grimdrunk by now…
That confirms my suspicion that Cio used to be a far more powerful devil.
Hello, thank you in spite of word! I repost in Facebook
Alestorm’s “Rum” really fits the refrain well. I can’t believe there isn’t an adaptation of this song yet
Is “Demon” synonymous to “Devil”? One finds myself increasingly confused.
Palebloom, huh.
Any relation to Paleblood? :V
