One wonders what good the awe-inspiring power of the maybe sword is worth when it cannot cut its single intended target. Maya is no less deluded than she was at the start; it seems her ascension to “true swordsmanship” is farcical, and the distinction between a poor and great swordsman is a line drawn to serve self-sanctimony. They are both conquerors and murderers, and they deserve each other.
Back when Maya cut Allison in half, she said that the Maybe Sword cannot cut anything, but that those who lack the ability to choose their fate will be cut regardless.
Maya believes that Incubus lacks the *ability to choose*, and so will be cut. She doesn’t realize that he simply already chose a long time ago.
The edge is eternal because it is infinitely small. It is manifested by will and perception. Though it cuts, its beginning and ending are the same. The intent is always the same.
Maya has been very adamant that this is going to end in her own death. I think that notion is holding her back. She expects to be killed, and thus is prevented from attaining victory by her own expectations. Perhaps she even wants to be killed, either as atonement or because she doesn’t want to have to kill Incubus, even after everything.
Meanwhile Incubus is at least honest that he doesn’t want to kill her. He will, but that doesn’t mean he wants to, just like he didn’t want to kill Allison after they failed in the first battle with Jagganoth. Perhaps his personal attachment to Maya is stronger than with Allison and also holding him back? He should be the mightiest on his side of the battle until Jagganoth is unsealed and yet he’s been locked down in a one-on-one for who knows how long.
She wants to die while killing Incubus because she believes that then her road will be over. Her answer to “Where does it end?” is “Here, now.” while Incubus says “Never.” In order to win, she will have to actually *choose* to be more than her swordsmanship. If all you are is your weapon, then yes. There is no end to the killing. She needs to realize that she can end *it* without it ending *her*.
Maya is the greater swordsman to Incubus in every way. Hers is a singular, clean cut. She is the true Successor to Meti and by all accounts was the superior Demiurge.
But in the world of K6BD, will trumps all, and Maya’s was shattered long ago, while the defining thing about Incubus is he will not give up. Ever.
Until and unless she is able to reconcile with herself, Maya will never stand a chance against Incubus. It is entirely possible she never will.
While musing on the cutting path, I asked a passing child “What is the point of the sword?” He pondered for a moment, brow strained on consternation, before answering “Isn’t it the tip?”
Interesting – we don’t know, and its true that she has lied about incubus committing atrocities to cover for her own. But she got all those scars on her neck somehow, and incubus talks about it being his “second or third?” time killing her. All previous points in the timeline they would have been buddy buddy, so.
At some point between now and her having a family, Incubus definitly tried to Decapitate Maya. That we can rely on.
Even though she’s a liar, I would not believe that she killed her own family or something along those lines, that would be a huge blow to her character in a bad way, not an interesting way.
But then again, why did incubus wait so long before tracking her down? Had she hidden away well, did he want to give her time to “get bored of it” and then decided she was taking too long? Possibly there’s more to the story that she’s leaving out, sure, but I don’t think it’s anything that majorly changes the point.
Efforts towards some form of reparations might have been better, but i think its better maya be a hypocrite in trying to find a new life then to submit to pointless violence if she isnt gonna live a life of direct atonement via delegation before instruction and abdication ( and then more instruction for a lil perhaps ) ( vs solomon just abdicating power ). If shes already royal enough to choose not to die by age, it really is just spite that prevents her from choosing to endure whilst talking with / distracting inccubus ala allison vs nukoku, but i guess nukoku didnt have a key whilst being the more aggressive will in that interaction [ note not necessarily atronger, but idk with key amplification and quantifying wills being somewhat silly to evaluate ] ( really girl judgement cutting not-you’s gf with your little pricky parts? looks painful as hell! ). anywho, complex, these two siblings — though incubus is still horrible — primed to be horrible by life, but he didnt need to lean into it and go all blood pits and massive standing army of emissary revenants ( unless theyre all intended as fodder for jag whilst he implements some plan, which is still……yeah. )
The noodle vendor who stays a noodle vendor may still have her family destroyed. Meti never promised safety, only that the life would be good for however long they had it. It’s Maya’s reaction that shows she was only playing house. She can’t protect her family, but when Incubus hurt her by killing them, she goes right back to the life of the sword for revenge.
For reference, Alison’s answer to this question was “I think your master was cheating” and “Sometimes we have to decide in the moment, whether we live or die.”
Incubus’s answer is that he’ll definitely keep going as long as he can. Alison’s answer is that she can only see what’s right in front of her, and she’ll have to decide when she comes to it. Are these two approaches that different from one another?
Ohhhh looks like we’re getting some resolution on the whole juggernaut star thing!!

It is, after all, only a sword. The best sword is still a worthless tool. Of course, it CAN cut Incubus, but it can’t kill him (so far).

Thorn Angel BBL?!?
“Cumberbatch to me, Mongo. Cumberbatch to Quenchin.”

The sword ends at the hilt. Simple as.
Wow you know a lot about swords. I bet YOU’VE seen some swords in your day
Oh no he’s hot!
he’s keen, he’s through
the glass you see?
It’d rhyme without the circle-C

Incubus really won’t give up on Maya. That blood arm array, though.
And now we switch away 🙁

This answer haunts me to this day.
That kid could be an INCREDIBLE Sword Noticer someday, I’ll send a message to headquarters to send a talent scout
Holy shit hes kinda packing here is he not?
They are both touched by Al-Yisun. Wink wink.
We see Nukoku’s appearance, Gog’s attack on Metatron, Maya’s strike, and now we’re swapping to White Chain. Do you understand what this means?
We’re going to get like four absolutely enormous attacks at once, likely all on the same page. Holy shit, hype and aura.
Rich for Incubus to assert that Maya will never be satisfied when she by her own account /was/, with her family, he just came by and killed them
Do we have anyone’s word on that but Maya’s though?

No, I think it’s more than that.

His Head of John forehead studs became demon horns. He’s finally a real Incubus.
Ah, forgive me, one either is, or is not royalty. Strong will can go far, but it is not necessarily the same thing.
THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTINGGGGGG
Incubus really is the coolest character
Man. I just love a villain that one can feel sympathy for, even if it does nothing to justify their actions.
“It never ends.”
And you think that’s an answer worth accepting, Incubus? Meti is still laughing.
For reference, Alison’s answer to this question was “I think your master was cheating” and “Sometimes we have to decide in the moment, whether we live or die.”

A sword that’s 30 hands long? Damn, that’s longer than my room is wide!
FANTASTIC scene change. VIVID. AAUAUAGHAGKJF. THANK U
