Let the breath be bound in the iron vault of the chest, for the world is yet unmade.
As the pillar stands in the shadow of the altar, let the mind become an empty vessel, holding neither fear nor tomorrow.
The serpent of patience coils within the marrow, waiting for the alignment of the stars and the splitting of the veil.
Awaken, O sleeping fire, and let the thunder of the hosts break forth!
The twin tongues of steel shall meet in the holy place, devouring each other in a fury of sparks.
Let the iron bite into the living tabernacle, that the warm libation of blood may flow to satisfy the dust.
By the decree of the edge, let that which is above be parted from that which is below.
The blade sweeps through the pillar of the neck, a seamless judgment separating bone from breath.
The crown falls to the earth like withered fruit, and the breath of life returns to the primordial wind.
And let the deep silence seal the stone, for the work is finished.
Ugh I can’t believe this multi-volume work of one person’s artistry that I’ve been allowed to read for free for almost a decade isn’t doing exactly what I want it to at exactly this moment barf-o-rama
I fear that while many take it as a given that Maya will win, in some ways I feel like a tie is in store. Maya has decapitated Incubus before but he used blood magic, Incubus tried to kill her multiple times before this. MAYBE a revelation of sorts is in store, MAYBE maya will survive, but narratively both maya and incubus as meti’s students, both ‘failing’ her teachings in different but similar ways. However I think ultimately, Maya will be the victor in the end. Incubus has cut up his ship an awful lot.
I love every aspect of Incubus, but I can’t help but feel like he’d be more effective if he gave up on swords and just used vampire blood magic or his bare hands.
A part of what I like about him, is how much variety there can be in how he fights. He can fire arrows from long distance with a bow, but also used them for a sort of close combat without his bow — and the way he’s using his sword here, is entirely different than on Rayuba.
I guess technically, what works best is just…whatever’s the best channel for his will, or gives him a stronger will, which sounds like something that depends on the person. But as someone enjoying these fight scenes, I just hope he keeps changing up the way he fights, maybe going for hand-to-hand combat like you said, just for the variety.
My understanding is that swords have some sort of mental thing to them in comic. He still loves Maya as family and can’t kill her with a sword. Maybe another method wouldn’t have that problem.
We saw last week he’s enjoying this (“you were magnificent”) but frustrated because she isn’t giving him some kind of satisfaction or validation he is seeking (“Cut me already. Isn’t there anything left of you?”).
I think it could be the opposite: he HAS to kill her with a sword. Maybe he could kill her with a nuclear strike or blood magic, but he’s working out a lifetime of mommy issues about Meti, and their mutual relationship, which is all tied up with the philosophy of what it means to be a swordsman.
Ah, the student attempts to teach the GrandMother to suck eggs. Alas, this will cost him in ways that offend the non-Euclidian denizens.
p.s. fyi, I am a professional non-entity hench. I’d seen way more than this wheel.
Hmm. What if the answer is she simply won’t swing at him? There will be no cut that takes him down – really, that’s what he wants, rather than to be left alone.
Maya takes her master’s head in a rage, and what good did it do her? She’s taken her little brother’s head before, and that’s done no good either, so why would killing him now but harder be the answer? Maya’s enemy has always been Maya.
Tbh this would be very interesting and satisfying as a conclusion for her, but I’m not sure that’s what’s in store given how vocal she’s been about hating this guy and wanting to kill him really bad
That was my first thought too – she went up there planning to kill him again but harder this time, so maybe it was that she needed to stop holding back. But his reveal that she still lied about parts of her backstory make me think that she hasn’t actually finished her own development, and then you have how Incubus seems to be trying to goad her into showing her true power and angry she’s holding back when they both know she’s the better one in combat.
Such a fierce battle. Will Maya win?
Maybe.

Yawn, this was so much better a decade ago.
Yes yes, we were all so much more joyful and full of youthful energy in the past, it’s true.
So were you, but you don’t see me telling you all about it
I didn’t see you in the comments a decade ago.
Gods, the way hes choking the hilt on the first pose of the last panel. He truly is a terrible swordsman

(sigh) I suppose I have to…
*CLANG CLANG CLANG* “GET CUT GET CUT GET CUT!” *CLANG CLANG CLANG*
Guys I think Kill Six Billion Demons might be parryslop.
There will be blood! Shed! The man in the mirror nods his head!
The only one! Left! Will stand upon the mountaintop!
He laughs but she has yet to actually swing on him. His offense is giving her no time but there is no telling what happens when she gets an opening.
holy aura
What difference is there between:
The crossroads devil?
The crossing of swords?
The star-crossed lovers?
The crucified?
It is nothing! Each and every one of these paths are of the great march unto doom…
you can see incubus switching stances for different syles
Woooh awesome blood blade vs pretentious blade, gooooo Inky
Maybe Jagganoth is already dead?
No air, food or water inside the orb ends him just like a sword to the head could. So his corpse drops out when the orb opens.
‘Shnnnnnn’
First panel. I do believe she has made her one cut.
Gotta hand it to Incubus, when it comes to stylish choices he’s probably the Number 1° Demiurge.
Good girl

Makes me wonder if she’s already made the cut in the first panel. Inky Binky’s already dead and just needs to catch up.
