as many second chances as she likes? why not, another layer deeper.
There must be no second chances. No do overs. Regret fills the jigsaw gaps in the universe. Perfection is a reaper’s blade. Life must be finite, for the weight of a choice to be infinite.
I’ve seen a few stories that depict versions of a real-life “quicksave” or “undo” button that do a good job depicting why this is so true. You’d trap yourself in your own groundhog day of consequence-free scenario optimization, until you lost all touch with reality and all actions became hollow and meaningless.
I don’t usually criticize KSBD because it’s consistently so well handled, but I WILL say flipping to Gog’s thoughts was jarring and unsubtle in a way that wasn’t necessary:
To convey Gog’s realization, I would have had her verbally express that “is she stupid? She can’t pull this off” thought in a humorous or sarcastic quip, only for her to meet Alison’s gaze. Then a couple wordless panels depicting a shift in Gog’s expression would be all that was necessary to communicate that dawning “oh shit” realization.
The “thought bubble” argument is factually inaccurate. Cio had a thought bubble way back when she first met Alison. It’s nothing new.
“Once several books ago” isn’t exactly an established precedent.
So Gog did realize that she’d be counted among those who ruined the world, and if anything was a bit too eager to count herself among them when Allison asked for her help.
Instead of trying to convince the person she’s trying to make a deal with of the futility of opposing her, and immediately moving into proposing her own deal, Gog could have more sincerely taken Allison’s demand for help by asking what kind of help she wanted.
Then, once she knew what Allison demands are, she could tailor her own offer to fit within those expectations as a yes-and. That seemed to be why she was doing an interview to begin with, and that she ran out of patience for that kind of information gathering will possibly tell us more about her and why she hasn’t successfully overthrown Zoss.
Also, I don’t mind the thought bubble, but incidentally the funniest alternative I can think of is if there was a cutaway to smaller Gogs piloting this one like a meat mech. Or even if they were outside her head but hiding in her hair.
Really makes me wonder if she doesn’t want an end to the cycle more than she wants to exist. Being a kalpa-old clown must suck.
Not just being kalpa-old, being kalpa-old and stuck in a world that for the most part is vastly younger. Jagganoth vaguely remembers the overall pattern of things, but does anyone have a clear enough view of the ever-extending past to truly harness the life experience needed to appreciate her dankest memes? Maybe Zoss and definitely YIS-UN themselves, but they don’t really hang out with her. She’s practically babysitting at this point.
That’s funny comic. It’s so attractive.
Rereading this bit, unsure how to feel about the fact i read “And you are gonna help me” and was reminded of a line from the intro of Hotel Mario. Next thing I know, Gog-Agog is going to tell me about the enclosed instructions manual.
