Honestly, it’s no wonder the high caste are so faithful. They live in a peaceful land, walking side by side with their benevolent, kindly god. This after many of them were true scum of the world, yet Mammon granted them succor and a new life.
To them, preparing to sacrifice their lives at a moment’s notice seems like the only correct choice.
When you put it like that, it makes me feel like Mammon might not be such a nice guy after-all. Its just kinda the last defense. Hell, my he doesn’t want to be beaten by anyone less ruthless than he is.
What was that story from a while back, about a peaceful kingdom that everyone wanted to live in? And then it got overpopulated and stopped being peaceful.
I wonder what sort of horrible things they use to keep the population in check here.
Given the seeming poor health of its inhabitants, Inbreeding. Blessedly, it is a self-correcting problem. A bloodline can only suffer so much incest before creating offspring that way ceases to be biologically possible.
In truth, the induction of new thieves into the population is probably considered a boon for the genepool.
I wonder what the people of the vault use for money, given that gold coins are their version of dirt. Ironically enough, given it’s rarity for them, actual dirt maybe their equivalent of gold coins…
Ledgers, it doesn’t matter what the denomination is. Europe was still using the Roman pound for hundreds of years after it stopped being minted. How? They just used it as an arbitrary number on the debts they kept, and then passed around debt ledgers. All the coins they have come from other kingdoms and are not necessarily legal tender within the vault. In fact, it would probably be considered theft to use the Dragon’s gold. So they probably just pass around debts on paper like we do that say “I owe you one”.
There does seem to be plants growing from the gold itself, so dirt seems unnecessary. This seems a bit like it was made to be a utopia, so perhaps they don’t trade and barter at all, but just live off of the surplus coming in from all those worlds Mammon owns.
I just realized that the houses in the vault have steeped roofs. Does that mean there’s weather in the vault? Interesting… it is enormous. I expect that it would.
I find a strange solace in knowing that the infinite fortress that was supposed to hoard vast gold instead guards something infinitely more valuable.
Does this make its master good or evil? An unwise man such as i has no answer to that query.

The most optimistic view I can manage is that they have to steal -something- for it to be a successful heist.
