BREAKER OF INFINITIES 4-165 to 4-166
Chapter: 4
“Keep all friends close, but especially keep the closest very tight inside you, next to your heart, where they can easily wound you. In time you will find the vulnerability to become a source of strength.”
-Dediam, Ascetic

oh god I hope this isn’t foreshadowing a suicide….
Why would it be that? That would be dumb as hell.
And if you can’t tell, that a fragment of cios devil mask
Yessss! Called it and hoped for it and here it is!
man, that’s one nasty zit
Last time they met, it was Allison showing up with superpowers to save Zaid who had mostly just been sitting around. Now, seeing Zaid with a cool mask flying off on a sword… Is this what that must have felt like for him, when Allison showed up?
Also. HMMMM. We’ve had a lot of hints so far that what we’re seeing might not be quite entirely real. When Allison didn’t wake up for so long, I started to think maybe I was wrong about those hints and this was real. But now, with the nature of this pain, and the way her arm is suddenly covered in blood out of nowhere, I’m still wondering how much of this is ‘real.’ (Or, how much of this is the reality we knew before. I have no doubt that everything going on matters and could easily have consequences regardless of if it’s the ‘real’ we expect or not.)
It’s all real. It’s all real.
Jadis isn’t lying or manipulating Allison. I don’t understand why this is so hard to understand. The author has stated on twitter how frustrated he is about people refusing to accept that Jadis is telling the truth.
Jadis manipulating Allison would completely destroy her character and make this story even worse. I know I don’t like the direction this story has gone, but at the very least we should believe the author when he says things.
What in the name of the gods do you mean “suddenly covered in blood out of nowhere”?!
She popped a finger-sized shard of (presumably) Cio out of her forearm, there’s a visible gaping hole in the last panel.
“Fog-ponderous! Dim strumpet! Wobblebrains! A fanfiction writer I, leavingst no seed or thread of a sequel? BITCH YOU THOUGHT.”
Her answer is simple: it’s not what she does. There may be a part of her that knows it’s doomed to failure. She knows what comes after. But she’s going through the motions unable to do anything else.
it would apear you have been drugged madam
“I don’t suppose any of you high n’ mighty superpowered philosophical warrior saints ever think that maybe Jadis is lyin’ through her teeth – if she has any, never seen her open her fool mouth – when she says shes she has perfect foreknowledge of the universe an’ all that?” – Amphy the Amphibian Girl, noted Louisiana swamp crypid
Well word of God has said so. So yes, jadis is omnipotent, and is telling the truth.
Dunno why people are still struggling with that concept tho.
I know, right????
Most frustrating thing about this whole webcomic. People can’t accept what is being told to them. Poor Abbadon. If I were him, I’d be tempted every day to just end the story and run.
Thankfully I’m not, but still.
Just because Jadis is telling the truth doesn’t mean that she’s right.
KSBD is first and foremost, a story. And the one key defining trait of stories is that for them to be told there needs to be some reason, point, lesson or value, however minuscule that makes them worth telling. If Jadis was absolutely 100% correct and that everything in the multiverse was predetermined and infinitely repeating then the webcomic would have ended immediately after telling us that because “Jagganoth destroys the universe and will keep doing it over and over again and there is nothing anyone can do about it because free will doesn’t exist and this is 100% confirmed fact” as a story has zero value and I’m not just talking about it lacking a moral lesson. The concept isn’t entertaining or otherwise emotionally stimulating, it doesn’t motivate any philosophical or moral contemplation and most certainly doesn’t have a point or a lesson. It’s an infinitely repeating statement and stories, by definition, have a beginning and an end.
So, the fact that the story has kept going despite that, suggests that there must be something that abaddon thinks is worth telling, something that isn’t already summarized by the above statement. This either means that Abaddon is lying about Jadis (or at the very least her being omniscient is true from a certain point of view) or that KSBD is essentially just an elaborate “wouldn’t that be fucked up or what” -esque shitpost.
It’s shitpost. Always assume shitpost. It makes life MUCH easier.
Here’s a lesson that KSBD might be teaching, though, if you really need one: Everything’s fucked, nothing can be changed, your struggles are pathetic, everyone’s going to die, your happiness is nothing but fleeting moments of chance in the face of a chaotic, unfeeling universe that can never be reasoned with. Nihilism wins every time. Shut up and deal with it.
Hell, if we get into anti-natalism talk soon, that’s gonna be a full bingo card.
I get that it sucks that a story you enjoy is ending on such a terrible note, but I suggest you make peace with it. I have.
Well if Abaddon has really dedicated the last decade of his life to a superbly intriquing and captivating story with incredible art that just ends up being the webcomic equivalent to the Sewer Man copypasta, then how could I possibly be disappointed about that? It would be the funniest shit ever!
“Uh, excuse me?” hisses the the always dangerous swamp cyptid.
“Mom!”says says Pris “just let it go.”
“Last one to get it” muttters the big green naked scaly girl “Oh yeah. oh yeah!”
>I’m not going to guess where the story is going
>DOOM, DOOM AND GLOOM, EVERYTHING IS FUCKED I HATE IT IN HERE
Consider the fact that you may be the only person in this thread to *obviously and clearly* see where the story is going, totally ending in a few pages on a sour note.
Consider that you may – not *are*, but *may* – be wrong.
You’d be getting really agitated for a silly reason!
One of my favorite webcomics ever has slunk into one of the most unpleasant nihilistic slumps I’ve ever experienced, of course I am getting quite agitated.
I think Abaddon has quite a lot of talent for art and writing, and I’m disappointed that he’s using that talent to make YET ANOTHER nihilism point.
Let me be completely honest. There have been multiple times in my life when I have struggled with suicidal ideation. One of the things that has helped me out in these dark, terrible moments was the kindness, support, and love from my friends and family, and the knowledge that, despite all of the terrible things that might be out there in the world, things can and will get better., and a wonderful future exists where everyone working together can create something beautiful for the entire world. That hope, that idealism, has been something I have had to hold onto whenever I see the news about pretty much EVERYTHING that has happened to the state of the world these past several years.
So forgive me if I’m a bit sensitive to works where the thesis seems to be “LOL nothing matters, get over it”.
*Ollies outie*
…and something… blue?
a shard of Cio’s mask, you dipwit (affectionate).
Anyone can die for someone or a cause, many have. Many have KILLED for someone or a cause. But, not many have what it takes to do everything plausible and implausible to LIVE for someone or some cause. It’s very simple, all that I ask is that you live, not just exist. But, I’m just an old coward now. What could I know, I turned my back on everything because it just didn’t seem worth it then. Looking back, maybe I was right…
“Ah, the red thread of the Fates.” He frowned. “We all know what *that* means, right?”
“Nope.”
“Nu-uh.”
“Can’t say I do, bro.”
“You people are idiots.”
Whoever said it was a mask shard earlier was right.
Always here for daoist flying sword shenanigans
Jadis can not Lie
Jadis can not speak Truth
Jadis can not Choose
The Wheel Does Not Turn
It Simply Exists
Being a fatalist, I see no trouble with any creature’s attempt to deny fate. I mean, they were *fated* to be defiant so–
“The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
Anyway how do we really *know* Jadis is omniscient? Maybe she’s only *nigh* omniscient, maybe her machine is flawed in some way and she does not see the entire four dimensional manifold of multiversal space-time from her fifth dimensional perspective?
We know Jadis is omniscient because Abaddon has literally said so multiple times, with an entire Twitter thread where he expresses his frustration at people not understanding that Jadis is literally omniscient.
And why should we imagine Sisyphus happy? His punishment is eternal. He can never accomplish his task. He has to suffer forever. How can anyone be happy about that?
Because he has something to do. Something to fight against. If we are to suffer eternally, it might as well be doing something spiteful, rather than lying down and accepting your fate.
How you deal with the inevitable has long been a theme of KSBD. Even if your actions are futile, it still matters what you do. Meaning doesn’t come from outcomes. It’s something we attach to them, the narrative that we create around the events of the world.
The splinter of hope hurts
I’ll be honest, useful as that sword thing is, I’m afraid of heights so…
I’m a little surprised at the comments hating on this section of the story. While it is not my favorite part, that’s understandable given what is taking place – a nihilistic fugue. Compare this with the Jagganoth storyline that went on and on and ended without a conclusion. That had action, but no satisfaction.
What are you talking about? We are currently in the *middle of the end* of Jagganoth’s story, not passed the end, as you so curtly suggest.
He’s not dead, but Jagganoth’s story has clearly lapsed for the moment. He’s been referred to a couple of times just to remind us that he exists, but has nothing to do with this whole Jadis (and now neo-Zaid) arc.
Which reminds me – I wonder if he ever found a new pair of pants?
Well if that isn´t a familiar shade of blue.
I cant believe it took me this long to realize that the 7 demiurges are the seven deadly sins.
you know, i allways wondred about how people do that floting-sword-riding thing in eastern stories. wouldent they just fall of? and besides, you cant stab someone with the sword if your riding it.
Ooo! That’s a cool image – surfing your sword right into someone’s face! It would make a dandy ending to a boss battle.
“Squaddle-lah we’re off!” – Zaid flying away
“Only Link can defeat Jagganoth”
“Well excuuuuuuuuse me, Jadis” – Link
Hmmmm it’s almost like “fully truthful and having seen the shape of All That Exists” does not mean “I can never be wrong”, regardless of dictionary shit
Goddamn, sometimes this comic is so beautiful it hurts.
Don’t you hate it when you dig pieces of your deceased flame out of your arm, I know I do
