Far from a victory, but not quite a failed venture just yet.
Holy fuck!
Holy moly guacamole
My predictions for the characters’ fates:
Mottom& Mammon-Being the weakest demiurges, I feel that at least one of them died.
David- supposedly impervious skin, but WC did manage to scratch him during the tournament. I’m not sure
Incubus-also fairly weak physically, he might survive in his astral form
We know Gog survives
Jadis I’m pretty sure survived, now free from her shell
White chain probably reemerged in the void
I mean, can White Chain even do that anymore? She’s made of meat.
“They flap their meat at each other.”
I love you.
Pretty sure Terry Bisson loves you too.
My money is on Mammon- his ‘Being bigger than my enemies’ strategy might have finally backfired…
My own prediction about Incubus: his severed head survives, because Head of John ignores such trivialties as any number of blades, and falls cursing somewhere in proximity of Maya. Some interesting sequence follows.
I like this!
I wonder if Maya parried it
Two survivors confirmed. I do hope White Chain survived.
Oh hey, I just noticed. It looks like Allison has already regained consciousness, she’s holding her head up. I think.
this is such a great page. love the look of agonized desperation on cio’s face and the corona in the water.
Those four close up shots are lovely, very nice work.
The conquering king has played her hand, and though the loss was great, it may have been worth the sacrifice. What of the other demiurges, were they part of the bargain? The loss of the hand is nothing if the body survives. The giving of an eye (or taking) may grant wisdom. The loss of three eyes and three hands, auspicious indeed!
Make of our hands, one hand.
Make of our hearts, one heart.
Make of our vows, one last vow:
Only death can stop us now.
Not even death. Death is only a door.
Hey! Cio for the win! Gimme fi- oh. Um.
Where is white chain ?? She in the Void, gazing upward??
Ciocie Cioelle Estrella Von Maximus the Third, always.
She’s a fanfiction writer.
Yay! Cio is alive! That means White Chain probably did, wherever she is. Let’s find everyone else who was behind them holding the spear and (probably) survived too!
ahhh, so that’s why she lost her eye and not, you know. a third of her head. (I think.)
it was Aspected Chaos that took that damage, then disintegrated. (again, I think.) they seem like they could take such a hit far better than any of them alone.
odds on that White Chain is equally injured, somewhere around here.
also nice work Cio, otherwise we might be out of comic now.
….I bet this is /also/ why Cio and White Chain aren’t on the cover! Allison losing an arm and an eye already had us kicking up a fuss, seeing matching injuries on all three of them would’ve caused utter chaos and maybe given some stuff away.
“Borrow” the key, Cio. Use it wisely.
Devil + key = bad crazy, repeatably.
Sixth panel, Cio seems to have both of her horns intact?
Shhhhhh. She broke it off afterwards to preserve narrative symbolism.
The Descent of Inanna
Inanna set out for the Underworld.
Ninshubur, her faithful servant went with her.
Inanna spoke to her saying :
“Ninshubur, my constant support,
My Sukkal who gives me wise advice,
My Warrior who fights by my side,
I am descending to the Kur, to the Underworld.
If I do not return,
Set up a lament for me by the ruins.
Beat the drum for me in the assembly places.
Circle the houses of the gods.
Tear at your eyes, at your mouth, at your thighs.
Dress yourself in a single garment like a beggar.
Go to Nippur, to the temple of Enlil.
When you enter his holy shrine, cry out :
‘O Father Enlil, do not let your daughter
Be put to death in the Underworld.
Do not let your bright silver
Be covered with the dust of the Underworld.
Do not let your precious lapis
Be broken into stone for the stone worker.
Do not let your fragrant boxwood tree
Be cut into wood for the woodworker.
Do not let the holy priestess of Heaven
Be put to death in the Underworld.’
If Enlil will not help you,
Go to Ur, to the temple of Nanna.
Weep before Father Nanna.
If Nanna will not help you,
Go to Eridu, to the temple of Enki,
Weep before Father Enki.
Father Enki, God of Wisdom, knows the food of life,
He knows the water of life,
He knows the secrets.
Surely he will not let me die.”
Inanna said, “Go now Ninshubur,
Do not forget the words I have commanded you.”
Inanna continued on her way….to the Underworld…

No eyeball nipples?
Ayyy Cio Saves the day!! kind of.. a little.. for now.
So Cio is alive, but her mask is damaged, and looks to be falling apart…
I got a bad feeling about this…
Actually, she’s healed mask damage before. She got a broken nose and a nasty gouge at the White Eyed Woman, and that healed while while was in Yre. Then she got a jaw-line fracture (IIRC) in the fight with the Priests of the Count, and that was gone by book 4. So there’s hope.
I hope that healing kicks in quick then.
Or somebody hands her a tube of quick set epoxy.
Really glad to see Cio still with us! And snappy enough to pull Allison out of the drink.
It bodes well for White Chain (I hope), so she must have survived too (I hope), albeit short an eye, an arm and some hair.
And I wondered about WC heading back to get regenerated angelically, but as someone else pointed out, she’s been different since the bout with Salami Dave, so I’m thinking her regenerating angel days might be over. Might be.
I think their merged entity Aspected Chaos got the spear launched (or whatever we were calling that multiple cubit thang), because it’s the spear launching arms that were severed. If so, then wither Jagganoth?
I don’t think all the demiurges bought the farm…it could go several ways, like Aspected Chaos – being in front – taking all the damage, and all demiurges surviving. But who knows? Mammon could have had a heart attack, Inky could have blown out a vein and bled out…the possibilities are endless.
They survived, but Cio & Allison are in bad shape, and it doesn’t look like Rayuba has much in the way of human services…
BUT – Maya’s gotta be around here somewhere, and we all know it ain’t over til the beautifully ample lady cuts!
“I’m so fucking done with this bish, “go kill a god” she said, “it’d be fun” she said. No more quirky dates. Next time we’re going to a bowling alley, have a cheese burger, and maybe, MAYBE, share a chocolate shake!”
“Don’t you lose her, Cio”, Gandalf told her. And she don’t mean to.
Thus spake CioCioSam!
Considering the description of Supreme Divine Art: Blood-Sated Sword Soul we got last page, they really made it out lucky. Given the descriptive text under the page, I doubt all the demiurges can say the same.
Looks like it’s over, boys. They’ll never free the Jaggahog now.
As someone pointed out on the previous page, a lot of that Blood Sated shtick appears to be clever advertising. Or inventor’s bombast. For a guy who’s supposed to be all up in there with tech, Jags is very fond of old-style trashtalk rhetoric. It may be his one weakness. That, and a fondness for flowers on his nether regions.
Well, at least Cio’s lost bits will eventually grow back. Probably…
She regenerated an entire body in an instant when separated from Alicio.
Ok correct me if I’m wrong but Cio’s body is just a “shell” right? Devils are given form through masks and names but their “real” self is formless flame right? Theoretically she could “change” her body to fix the damage right? Maybe? Same goes for Angels, they’re not the same as Devils but their body is just stone/metal armor basically.
White Chain currently has a human form, but I don’t think she actually “became” human. Following the same reasoning as Cio, maybe she could also heal herself somehow? Maybe Allison could do fix both of them with the Key of Kings?
But then again, we know that she’s not able to fix herself so maybe it’s not something that can be fixed at all? Maybe it’s not a normal physical wound?
Cio and Alison suffered the same damage and I’m sure White Chain is in the same condition, so maybe we’re not dealing with a wound to the body, but to the soul? They were joined together in a single being, the body of the Aspected Chaos was just a shell made to contain three distinct souls. Maybe the real damage from the Red God’s swords is dealt to the soul rather than to the body
If I understand Abbadon’s commentaries, the bodies of devils are *projections* of their flames; c.f angel armour which is a literal shell to contains a fluid body.
He also said that the mask give devils semi-stable *personalities*. IIUC, the devil’s body-shape is already semi-stable and/or externally imposed but there’s not a person there until there’s a mask. Hence, Valdok unmasked was mindless but not a formless blob.
That said, a wound to the soul sounds like an astute observation. I think Cio probably could restore her arm, eye and horn, but not until she comes out of shock and spends a long, long time in a quiet, nurturing environment.
