Using two or three is much more fun anyhow. And there’s no point at all in picking up any kind of blade if you aren’t planning on having a little fun with it.
Without a key of kings, as a should-be-mortal sustained by hate long past the number of her years, the peerless swordswoman who surpasses all others, what other mortal could a demiurge fear? Alone of all living people, Maya can stand in the face of a demiurge and deny them passage.
And so we come to the constant problem with the Demiurges… they are all mad. And, while some knowledge may be gleaned from the words of those taken leave of their senses, it is not wise to trust too fully their tales.
So, who now should we believe? The Mad Drunkard or the Mad Coward? Maybe neither!
He may be a terrible swordsman, but speaking as a bowyer with 10+ years of experience making bows, Incubus’ archery technique at the top of the page there is chef’s-kiss-perfection. Clearly he knows his Shivering Arrow at least as well as his Head of John. If only he devoted that same level of understanding to the Art of Cutting as well…
I hope this fight lasts at least a few pages, because demigods dueling upside-down on a flying warship over a massive battle might just be the most awesome setting for a battle I’ve ever heard of.
So it was Maya, and not Incubus, who killed Meti. If you believe one over the other, which feels unwise. But if true, then Maya’s path is not one wrought of revenge, but something else.
What is it, then, the source of all that hatred? I think we’re about to find out.
She hates him because he’s everything she’s not. For the most part that speaks well of her. For the most part. For the other parts… that doesn’t change the reasoning.
Also, you can see some „reddish drops“ from the tip of the sword she is holding. Before them I wondered whether it was blood or jewellery of the sheath.
…I don’t really get why this would be a twist. I had thought Incubus had killed Meti for hurting Maya, but it makes more sense for Maya to do it.
Incubus would never have killed Meti unless she old him to. He was a desperate child and she gave him his sword and his sister. Her and Maya were his world.
Maya, born a noodle vendor, is the one who chose to be a world-spanning conqueror and monsterous destroyer of life. Of all the demiurges, Maya is the only one who walked the path of power without loss or desperation to drive her. (with the possible exception of Mammon, who’s past we are given few details of.)
I’d say the opposite. When Maya left he left with her. I think he thought fondly of Meti as much as his little sociopathic heart could. But he LOVED Maya. Not in a sexual way. Not in a healthy way. But more than he’s ever been able to (or would allow) with anybody else. Killing Meti, that’s one thing, but when she left him? Left everything? (and I think he’d look at both of those separately, like he’d be legit more understanding if she’d decided to kill him as a rival or something, but abandoning it all to become some fucking nobody was enraging all on it’s own) That’s when that love fueled hate.
Meti cut Maya to the quick with just a few words. And at a certain level of skill, the sword just moves on it’s own. Maya knew the cut from Meti was fatal.
When you have it all and stand before the throne of Heaven, Then what?
Meti’s answer was to live drunk in a barrel. Allison’s answer is to keep moving forward.
Sabaoth, Koss Priest, of The Conduit of Dark Science
People keep talking about Incubi being a poor swordsman. I’m starting to think that, maybe, that’s on purpose. What greater insult can you pay to someone like Maya then beating them ocer and over without needing to use actual technique.
I think it is meant that he is a poor swordsman because he thinks the sword contains meaning, purpose, or power. He does not rule the sword, he is ruled by the sword. He is a slave to his own power, his own blade. He is not someone who could live drunk in a barrel, or even throw his sword away and become a farmer for a few years. The only useful thing you can do with a sword is smash it to pieces and throw it in a ditch. Incubus will die on his sword having never known joy.
If you think this shit’s crazy wait until chat realizes that Jadis isn’t a reliable information source because there’s nothing about her condition that implies she can’t lie.
If you look back, you’ll see that Maya’s blade is sheathed in the panel before she speaks to Meti. It is drawn and bloodied when she begins running away.
A demigod trained by the greatest swordswoman of her time, is it so insane to believe she had drawn and sheathed the sword faster than most can blink? It being sheathed means nothing about it being used in the moment we did not see anybody’s hands.
Terrible swordsman
Being an incredibly poor swordsman, Incubus wouldn’t know anything about decapitating people in one single blow.
Using two or three is much more fun anyhow. And there’s no point at all in picking up any kind of blade if you aren’t planning on having a little fun with it.
Oh yes you will. But it shall be your own laughter you hear.
He thought she was reaching for the maybe sword and bro was shook. That is fucking hilarious.

How very interesting…
I believe his words here more than any other he’s spoken in this comic up till now.

Could still be revenge, he killed her family after all.
True, I forgot about it.
And yet, she never seemed to blame him for that. For feeding Meti’s body tot the dogs, but not for killing her own family.
Meti predicted that Maya’s children were ash. There was no Joy to be found in her future.
She hates him because he’s everything she’s not. For the most part that speaks well of her. For the most part. For the other parts… that doesn’t change the reasoning.
These two have rehearsed those lines in their heads for decades.
Makes for a proper dramatic last meeting.
Gotta say, even if Incubus is a failure…He’s a damned sexy one.
I would not trust him in bed. He is not a particularly good “swordsman”
Also, you can see some „reddish drops“ from the tip of the sword she is holding. Before them I wondered whether it was blood or jewellery of the sheath.
Ah, the old “You and I are not so different” approach. Sad, Incubus. That never works.
You could say, for being students together they could not be more different. The disagreement is irreconcilable.
I think both of them would vehemently disagree with that, for very different reasons which just reinforces the point.
Boop six billion snoots
“If I die tonight, I’ma make it look pretty”
Live fast. Die young. Present your head to the Shogun in a beautiful box.
…I don’t really get why this would be a twist. I had thought Incubus had killed Meti for hurting Maya, but it makes more sense for Maya to do it.

i can hardly see incubus giving a shit a about found family meti was just the old bat that handed him a sword

Close enough, welcome back handsome Squidward
Did Maya kill Meti? Maybe. Maybe not.
And I’m not being facetious; I suspect Maya never *intended* to kill Meti; I think Maya overestimated Meti’s royalty.
Consider Maya’s own words:
“Those that lack the ability to choose their own fate will be cut regardless.”
And then there is the possibility that Inky goaded Maya into using the Maybe Sword– with Meti in the blade’s path.
Typical KSBD– there is more going on here than simple prevarication or misdirection.
Meti cut Maya to the quick with just a few words. And at a certain level of skill, the sword just moves on it’s own. Maya knew the cut from Meti was fatal.

Wooooo go inky!
Did he just make a sword out of his own blood?
Ew.
I guess he has a deficiency of iron in his body now.
Hoping Maya will be able to remedy that.
He has truly made himself a sword.
Incubus is and has always been an amazing student for all that he is an atrocious swordsman.
Given they are upside down, I am slightly disappointed Incubus’s hair isn’t stuck straight up in the air
They may be moving fast enough to blow it to the side like that. They’re on the hull of a ship, after all

wtf
If you look back, you’ll see that Maya’s blade is sheathed in the panel before she speaks to Meti. It is drawn and bloodied when she begins running away.
Looks like it’s still sheathed to me. There’s a few spots on the end of the scabbard, but the sword is definitely still in there.
Then she killed her with the scabbard.

Well, that’s a demiurge for ya, can’t trust a word they say.
