“Why am I always running after you?”
A very good question, Sir I Have No Role In This Story.
Allyson doesn’t need you. You chased after her because you needed her. You needed her to need you. In other turnings of the wheel, you needed her to motivate you.
Look at her. She’s not here because of you, or even despite you. She’s here regardless of you. She hasn’t really been looking for you for ages, beyond the level of “It’d be nice to see him again, hope he’s ok.” Sure, she’ll be angry about this, but she’s already been through that transformation.
The person who’s death changed /her/ was Cio. And this fight? It’s probably going to be what motivates Nukoku.
That’s very unfair to Zaid. He looked for Allison for 3 years, an awful lot longer than Allison was looking for him. They were a slice of “home” in a batshit insane world to each other, and seem to be quite concerned for each other in every interaction that they’ve had. Allison didn’t stop actively hunting him either, the whole reason she went to the tournament was to find Zaid.
She’s here very much because of Zaid, who has been basically the key motivator of her this entire time. Either in finding him to make sure he’s okay after they both got dumped into literal hell, or in getting her out of her turbo depression to go fight against the end of the world. And Zaid, in turn, is here because of her, who answered the call of duty with the resources of a nation they’ve been building in Allison’s absence.
Chasing after Allison has been his goal (albeit a bit of a slow one given the nation-building) basically the entire time he’s been a free agent in this world.
You kinda said the same thing but in a nicer framing. Maybe attributing a little more care to Allison as well? Which is somewhat fair – I dont think Zaid is meaningless to Allison or anything, but i think the previous’ point about Zaid’s continuous concern for Allison being pretty much un-requited in its intensity (even with the Tournament IMO) is in itself a fair read. Though- given his frequent role of being a wet Man-Flavored blanket over the narrative I think can commiserate with Daemon’s spiteful tone, but I’m pretty sure its (mostly) an urge to be unfair to the guy.
I think any differences in “concern intensity” just comes from who they are as people. Allison is NOT a forward thinker. She does not contemplate the future, she acts in the present. Because of that, she doesn’t concern herself very much with other people’s wellbeing (at least not openly). She will act when an opportunity presents itself, but otherwise assumes they will take care of themselves and focuses on her own shit (which, to be fair, has become FAR more important). On the flip side, Zaid worries about her BECAUSE she’s impulsive and BECAUSE he’s more of a thinker than she is. He worries about the future and about his friends when they go off and do reckless shit. And, on some level, I think Allison knows that, but also recognizes that she has to do things her own way. I don’t think she EVER talks down to him for worrying about her. She barely even tries to assuage his worries. Her usual response is “yep, that’s valid, but I don’t have much choice. Got a multiverse to save.”
And let’s be real here. She travelled the multiverse to find a boy she’d been dating for…a few weeks? Months? I forget exactly how long it was, but it wasn’t long. That’s a LOT to do for someone you barely know.
I definitely feel like they’ve developed a genuine, if awkward, friendship with each other. Zaid definitely isn’t the main character, though. So he, obviously, gets less focus.
NOOOO NOT ZAID! IT’S JUST LIKE GOG SAID, HE GETS KILLED OFF IN THE THIRD ACT TO MOTIVATE THE PROTAGONIST! I really hope there’s some way to keep him alive…
Sorry Zaid, you blew it as a general.
You should’ve been directing the various armed forces not tangling with demi-gods, Gigantor-class demons, and carelessly exposing yourself to fire from rampaging Star-lords like Incubus.
On the other hand, it does seem like your death was Very Necessary. I say that because in this battle, where Allison’s Power derives from Motivation and self-will, your gruesome fatality is likely necessary to push our protagonist further against her limits and careless demeanor.
Hail Zaid ! Sniped for being Heroic. Hail and Farewell !
Over 90% of the comments are talking about Zaids unfortunate fate. Only a small handful even acknowledges the fact, that Alison just got hit extremely hard, without even putting up much of a fight, by a randomly reappearing sidecharacter. Don’t gete wrong, 001 must have been strong as Mammons right hand woman and for sure her power is increased by the poisoned gifts bestowed upon her by Incubus (or Jagganoths servants), but getting beaten this badly by a character that had barely any screentime surprised me somewhat.
I hope Alison can channel one of her god powers soon, like she did back at the conclave of devils.
What really surprises me is the vehemence with which 001 denounces Allison. After all it was Mottom who crashed her palace into Mammon’s treasure-fortress Yre and caused its utter destruction. It was Jagganoth who tore Mammon apart and ended him. By contrast, Allison made a fair impression on Mammon and he spared her.
So what action of Allison’s earned her the epithet, “Foul Thing ?” Maybe it’s because 001 and other empowered ones view Allison as an aberration – one who wields power which she didn’t earn and doesn’t deserve – in short – a vain and cosmically dangerous upstart, compared to all the others who’ve had to kill legions to achieve and maintain power.
Imagine the reaction if Gollum blasted the power of the One Ring against Sauron himself. Sauron would rage, “You Worm ! You crawling thing !” Yes, now it begins to make some emotional sense to me.
When did Jagganoth have the opportunity to promise a place in the next world to Mammon’s loyalists ? Although it hasn’t been depicted, I assume the offer was made just after the fall of Yre and their alliance was cemented by the time the Ring of Power tournament was underway on Rayuba.
Yes, it is surprising that Allison has taken such a big hit. Yet this must be necessary to break her limits. I view Allison as a mercurial being. She’s not totally yin or yang like Sentry/The Void, instead her confidence wanes and waxes. I feel that Allison is relying on Maya’s training, the prophecy of Jadis, and a certain reckless devil-may-care attitude at present – none of which can entirely prepare her to break the chains of causality. I feel this will continue to be the case until Allison wakes to her own path and mantra.
Cheers !
Correction.
I don’t believe there was time for Jagganoth to have made the offer that 001 refers to – not while Mammon was alive at least. I might believe that the Priests of the Count would consider offers of alliance after Mammon was dead – but not while he lived – given their fanatical devotion.
After the Battle Royale on Rayuba, Jagganoth was imprisoned by Solomon David’s Technique of Relief / Time Out sphere. So unless he was doing some kind of spirit projection chats from inside the sphere, or had letters written up to be delivered “In Case I’m Temporarily Imprisoned” – I don’t know how or when the offer could’ve been made.
I certainly believe that Incubus claims to speak on behalf of Jagganoth. Remember, he is known as a cunning negotiator and seducer, his name implies as much. During and before the entire Mammon/Yre ark, he constantly visited Allison in her dreams and offered her power, if only she would follow “his way”. He certainly wasn’t idle in the 3 years since the destruction of Allisons will. Still the size of the force he amassed by being such a vile snake tongue, it is horrible.
incubus is the tipe of characther that literally never done anything right or good in his life i swer to god, what an anoyng and abnoxious mother fucker
I mean, crap, man! Look at that. That’s like, his stomach plug on the ground back there. You don’t see that everyday.
I mean, that doesn’t really even seem possible if you think about it, with body organs, bones, and cartilage and, I mean, I’m no doctor, but… it was like one clean chunk.
and once more he has proven he is, and will always be, an exceptionally poor swordsman
this has gotta be the most hyped set up in the history of hype set ups iv seen
You give bows a bad name.
Clean your feet, Slut
Does 001 have Mammon’s key?
pretty sure jagajaga ate the dragon’s key along with the witche’s
Oh man Incubus blew his tits clean off??
Honestly I gotta respect the hustle of gunning down the main party

A true lord of creation decides not only his own fate, but the fates of others as well. His direction is a spear, and its every thrust paves his path.
How many demons do you think Incubus has manning the Godship Sivran at this moment?
Roughly, eh, six billion?
INCUBUS YES!
Holy shit

The irony that Al-Yi-Sun’s allies all might die trying to stop her from overexerting herself in helping them is not lost on us as the readers.
Wait, what? Zaid is all meat inside? Even if he’s holed up clean off, we should see a cross section of his spine at least.
Mans got the Kung Pow treatment lmao.

Aw, man! How anti-climactic. I’d hoped he’d get a better death than being murked by a freaking arrow by someone who doesn’t even know who he is.
Also, SHOULDN’T he know? Wasn’t it public knowledge among the demiurges who Zaid was when Solomon was holding him?
