“And lo, with but a single word spoken, fire poured forth from the heavens. It fell upon gods and mortals alike, and many were cast down! And the worshippers beheld this dread wonder and trembled, for their idols and kin were consumed before their eyes!”
shoutouts to ships so big that their point-defense cannons alone are capable of firing blasts that can rend even the largest dreadnoughts apart. this one’s going down in history alongside such greats as the Subspace Gunship. hell yeah
Can someone explain to me/remind me of Incubus’ motivations here? I get that he’s always been playing everyone against everyone else — playing nice with the Demiurges while secretly training/indoctrinating Allison, and conspiring with Jagganoth–while his true loyalty is to himself.
A few times, though, I’ve been confused by his rationale. Like, when everyone fought Jag on Rayuba, he seemed to actually be leaning in to the fight, when he could have easily betrayed and run away from the start. Ditto here: wouldn’t it be in his best interest to let the allied forces and Jagganoth beat on each other at full strength, and then swoop in with his giga-warship to mop up the victor?
Incubus’ motivations are survival above all else. At Rayuba, he realized his pact or alliance with Jagganoth was not as firm as he thought – instead of having the opportunity to align their forces against the others while they were bickering among themselves, he instead realized that to the Chakravartin he was the same meat as all else. So he fought alongside the Demiurges, because that was his best shot at survival.
Here, Incubus acts on incomplete information. The only people across the Wheel who know how little time is left until Jagganoth breaks free is Solomon and the protagonists – as far as Incubus or any of his subordinates know, or care, Jagganoth’s re-emergence is over the horizon, not imminent, and they have the luxury of time to prepare for his resurgence and conquer the Wheel. What IS imminent, however, is the gathering of so many forces aligned against his cause in one place, at the center of all worlds – either a mustering for a massive counterattack, or fools keeping vigil over Jagganoth’s prison, it matters not – they are all in one place, and that makes a numerically inferior force a prime target for a decisive strike.
In short, Incubus likely did plan to bide his time conquering the Wheel and amassing the power of the Keys to himself so that Jagganoth could be brought down when he escapes, but with all his(presumed) enemies congregated in a single place, the opportunity to cleanly dispose of them is one hard to ignore. Even if he is an exceptionally poor swordsman, his strategy here, were it not for the reality of the situation, is sound.
GET ME CLOSER I WANT TO HIT IT WITH MY SWORD!!!
This (and the past few pages) must have taken *ages* to draw
Can’t wait for Allison to just slice this thing in half all casual.
…Are we winning?
What we are setting up for is Nyave ramming Incubus’s ship and Maya’s lessor apostle Zaid facing down Incubus.
Perfect!
And so begins the fireworks at the end of the Mulitverse.
How very interesting.
gooood these two pages are gorgeous….
