this is only partly accurate. angels, as far as the comic has shown, are for the most part agendered, rather than androgynous, and seem intent on forcing that mentality on each other (ala that page way back when where they bitched at white chain for appearing human and then she subsequently unmade her face). the one applying the “human gendered norms” is white chain (possibly also juggernaut over there), not us.
in english for the last two to three hundred years, men had determined that linguistically, masculine pronouns would be considered neutral. it is a way of erasing women from language and thereby from thought. this has been relaxed a bit over the last fifty years, but you still see this when agender characters are presumed male, or men are taken to be the default, or people object to the older usage of ‘they’ for singular gender neutral. so i think your explanation is incomplete: angels in this story map onto recent ideas about gender in english, with white chain offering a critique of those ideas similar in substance to very recent (last 50 years or so) critiques of english.
“Masculine pronouns as neutral in order to erase women” is actually quite false.
Let me begin by stating that I myself am a woman with an educational background in linguistic etymology.
Beginning from our languages original proto-Indo-European roots, the word “man” (in Sanskrit, “manu”) referred not to males of our species, but to our species as a whole. The word “human” didn’t come into being until very recently, historically speaking; until that time, all people were “men”. When the proto-Germanic language came back to Europe, married males were called “wermen” and females “wifmen”, which persisted until as recently as Middle English. The word “human” didn’t fully come about until the late 18th-early 19th century, though using “man” to refer to our species continued to be the norm until the early 20th century when Feminism started becoming more aggressive. Thus, when you read things such as “God made Men in His image” and “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal”, those are NOT evidence of historical misogyny, it’s just how language worked at the time.
On a related note, at the same time as all the above, all children, regardless of gender, were “girls”. The word “girl” simply referred to a person who was not yet considered a legal adult, with male girls called “knave girls” and female girls called “gay (or gaye) girls”. The word “boy” referred to workers and servants, regardless of age and gender, and was used in this way until the early 20th century (calling out “boys and girls” was calling to the children and servants of the household). When you read accounts of African Americans being derisively called “boy” up into the American Civil Rights Movement, it wasn’t that the racists were saying they weren’t men, but that they were only servants.
TL;DR – skysquids’s statement is incorrect and I explained the linguistics, so scroll back up and read it because it can’t and shouldn’t be TL;DRed.
dang, i knew they got that wrong but didn’t have the knowledge required to explain it. thanks a lot! also, holy crap i learned things, that hardly happens for me in comments xD
Which also makes sense in anthropological terms because women matter and are typically, even in hunter-gatherer societies, more protected, while men are genetically less valuable and tend to range farther afield.
Not really….. that’s just some feminist misgivings. While it has what you could maybe consider sexist causes that brought it about it was from circumstance of the sexism of the time rather than intentional sexism.
The words come from the original Old English word Mann for the world for human being, and the prefixes wer- (male) and wif- (female, which became the word wife). Wermann was man, and wifmann was woman… over time mann became man, wifmann became woman, and wermann became something else for a little while before it just fell out of use and people shortened it to using mann and then man. People lost the prefext for talking to males simply because people talked to men more than they talked to women. But man did and STILL means all of mankind or the human race as a whole.
As for male pronoun being the default gender that’s simply false, in almost every language female is the default gender when describing things. There are various exceptions though, and some languages things are different genders are used depending on what you are talking about.
Though honestly you could see that as sexist if you want. Men seeing there objects they own as female. *Shrugs* but it wasn’t again…… thats just the way things where.
Though it was more the fact things they wanted to talk about in a way they had personality and needed to give a gender to they tended to give female because they thought they where wonderful and beautiful and grand…. and they tended to hold women up on a pedistile.
I am a bit ashamed to speak on this topic but it might be safer to use the Schrödinger’s quantum penis rule in this case. Said part both exists and does not until proven otherwise.
Alas! We have fallen to arguments and bickering! Siblings is all we can be called if we are to base our relations on the kind we emulate! Kin falls before the cause of Kind! Kind bows before the power of King! But there are no kings, and so we stand tall, nitpicking each and every word. YSUN would not find us wanting, for words are rarely ever used sparingly among us!
Aeons are what we are. We do not reflect a truth of ourselves in our untrammeled forms, we *are* a truth of ourselves in our untrammeled forms. Denying this is a terrible insult to the order of creation we are intended to uphold. Whether one is a brother, a sister, or kin like Vigilant Gaze. But good luck getting anyone to believe that, instead of reincarnating you for heresy.
Yeah I mean it is clearly a metaphor male is considered default so all Angel’s are considered male anyone that deviates from that is considered weak. It kind of annoys me when me when people act like metaphors intended on alien/ fantasy characters. Everyone understand the transformers are male. For example
It goes beyond that. Angels are created as paragons of stoicism, to an unhealthy degree. Having no emotion and an ironclad determination to uphold the is useful when dealing with horrible demons and unruly gods, but it isn’t so good on the long term when dealing with fragile mortals and planes hanging in delicate balance.
The angels were created with only one archetype: the stern watchman. It is a good thing to have, but they need to know when to step away from it when needed.
One hopes you would condescend to bless a gathering where the primary libation is not alcoholic – and may well just be leaf-based (though one is neither milliner nor poisoned by mercury). Which the first four names of guests would be, one has a good idea; an intriguingly eclectic mix.
One may attempt the making of quite a small madiera cake, with quite a whole bottle of madiera. Purely to honour the gods of course.
Maybe not all angels have wings or they could manifest differently, two of the angels at that gathering in the void didn’t have wings, one was a geometric shape and another had wings where the head would be.
An angel who can’t even let herself be free can’t have wings, can they? And when you think about it… We’ve never seen a Thorn Knight with a true form that expresses wings.
They’re all trapped in toxic, poisonous denial of self-want. The least useful kind of lie.
Great nails were forged of angel’s feathers, and driven into Jagganoth’s flesh. It was thus that he is blessed with a body that is completely indestructible. Such that not even six demiurges could cut him.
So… what is to stop one of the other demiurges from taking an angels feathers and doing the same to themselves? Presumably a demiurge would be able to defeat an angel, considering Zoss is supposed to have defeated all the prime angels by his lonesome, before he got the Key. (And am I the only one who’s wondering how much of that origin story we have been told was actually true? Considering even YISUN themselves was a consumate liar and proud of it?
I imagine that persuading an angel to part with some of their true form, to lessen themselves and their puissance, that takes some doing. In particular, the equivalent of killing them is not enough to do it as they can just take a few thousand years break in the Void and return good as new, and they’re not really in all that much of a hurry. I fear that this is the doing of 1 Metatron and 2 Michael, and that a serious amount of arm twisting was done to let it come to pass.
All in all, it’s absolutely fascinating. I know of a convenient popcorn vendor that I can stop at while awaiting further information.
Rightly so, and rightly was 2 Michael so scornful of White Chain clinging to the putrid deeds and mores of humans. These aren’t even of White Flame; what good can come of them?
Human shapes, now human fashions, next come human thoughts and human passions.
I wonder, does the presence of clothes in the void, ie the spiritual space indicate shame on JS’s part? That protective gesture of the arm suggests so. JS is ashamed of what they are. Whereas White Chain, their dogmatism notwithstanding, is not. Some serious brainwashing by 2 Michael and Metatron has gone down, methinks.
Behead a king who cannot die.
Send through the seven-headed beast’s territories a decoy of no importance.
Leave a chosen successor to an angel who will not kill them.
Spare a demiurge with no desire to rule.
Nothing is as it seems.
You lose faith in the Law you were created to serve. The only purpose you receive in these latter days is serving the apocalyptic whims of a tortured Metatron. And when you’d already made up your mind to do it, and worked yourself to a fever pitch in anticipation of the end of your suffering, some other angel comes in and convinces your boss to stop. Now you’re stuck trying to pull off some hair-brained scheme of Royalty, when all you want deep in your on-fire soul is to burn it all down.
‘I will say it once more – I am you, and you are me.’
The Wheel turns over all things. The Void reveals purest Truth.
Remember – this shell is not your body.
Most angels at least have humanoid bodies. First. I’d imagine it’s convenient in a world designed (recently, not originally) around accommodating humans, and second, humans made the shells, of course they’d be humanoid. Plus Yisun is humanoid.
Most angels have animalistic or inorganic bodies and the only humanoid thing about them is their shells, which seems to not affect their actual appearance. Since both of them have been forced out of their shells we’re looking at their true forms. More than anything the fact that they look human must be because of how they view themselves, despite working under such radically different worldviews
Before his battle with Maya Ten Meti forced his soulflame to reveal this form, Juggernaut Star’s took the form of a pack of penitent skeletons, flayed, and when penance nails hammered into their eye sockets.
One thing bugs me though: how did White Chain pull this stunt out? I am trying to think of any precendent for her both rodong the lightning and pulling someone out of their shell thing. Is it something angels can generally do? A bit confused here.
Angels untethered to a physical anchor will naturally inhabit the void. White chain reached from there to yank Juggernaut Star into the void with Her, leaving Juggernaut’s armor inanimate.
Mayhap it’s newness, intended ephemerality, and active and ongoing destruction render it too fleeting to cast much of a shadow into the void. One must imagine that Rayuba, cherished as it is by Lord Solomon, bearer of the word and ruler of a seventh of creation, would be both present and protected in the void.
I will never criticize someone for finding a sibling attractive. It does sometimes mutually happen. I, my parents, my 16 siblings, and my over 50 nieces and nephews wouldn’t be who we are if it didn’t.
So White Chain prevailed over Juggernaut, but sadly had to return to the void herself to do it. Still, neither are what you’d call dead; only the humans possess that “gift”. Who is more fortunate, we or they?
We have only one life and do not get the “luxury” of repeating historical mistakes. All of the mistakes we make are new ones and a lesson for those who come after us.
We are rotated upon the great wheel many times, and are given the lesson until it is learned. Our descendants, if not forewarned will have to repeat the lessons.
Note that Angels are capable of reaching a state even closer to what we would call dead than they are currently in. At the moment, these two are simply banished to the void. If they were to fight and take lethal damage in this state, they would die and take time to reincarnate. How long this takes depends on how old their current incarnation is. The prime angels that Zoss murdered breaking into throne were as old as the universe at the time of their deaths, and as such have not yet reincarnated. Also, this kind of reincarnation doesn’t necessarily leave the angel with the same personality and memories, and will start out in a weak vapor state.
Humans meanwhile die and then stay dead forever. Not a great deal. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind that angels are not quite immune to death and the loss it brings.

Seems like super bad idea to just drop the assault on one of the most violent and dogmatic angels seen in comic just because they turns out to out to be a hot lady
Not like White Chain stands a chance anyway. The fact that Juggernaut is weeping suggests it might benefit WC to open a dialogue rather than getting her head pattram sword-handed right off.
“Look at us, White Chain. Look at what they make us give.”
“Do you want mercy now? After all of this?”
“Would I get it?”
“…maybe we both need mercy and forgiveness.”
screw all y’all, i’m going home
Sisters, not brothers! We are more than we say! We are less than we think! Glory to YSUN and all Her creations!
Yep, sisters. I think that explains a lot of the hostility, neh?
Angels are androgynous; do not take their look to refer to human gendered norms.
I think in human terms, White Chain and Juggernaut would be woman who were “Assigned androgynous at birth”, or something.
Boy have you ever missed the point.
2 Michael! I almost didn’t recognize you on that smurf account. How *are* you, sir?

aaaaaaaand you had to go there.

They are all lies anyway.
They are considered lacking a gender, and use brother in the univursal sense not male sense. They would see a male angel as just a big a deviant.
What I feel when I see that emaciated body, that pitiful look in her eyes, those teary cheeks… I know what she feels.
I want to be what is expected of me.
I must earn my place by being what is expected of me.
I must try harder. They say so. They say it would stop if I just tried harder.
I must be harder.
I must not be like you, beautiful sister.
I must have Thorns.
Ow. That hurt to read.
Us sees un spiky thing we thinken there be summat inside worth protectin.
It is clear that your presence would be most welcome at parties in the speaking-houses of the wise, Prost-Phet. I have heard those same lies before.
Woe to us who have been touched by such falsehoods, even for an instant.
I wouldn’t say they are necessarily falsehoods. They are not lies. They are wishful thinking on Star’s part.
Based on the lies her torturers forced on her.
Yeah.
You and I understand one another, Grand Priestrix.

Such a painful flame, one’s own self. May Prim, in her ashes, give solace.
Solace never lasts.
It is better to stand and go on. Anguish is a better companion.
Also, booze.
Then you find solace in your anguish. It is solace all the same.
Okay, yeah, fine, can I keep the booze?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
NO WINGS :O
They have been traded away in exchange for a smokin hot bod.
Maybe not all angels have wings or they could manifest differently, two of the angels at that gathering in the void didn’t have wings, one was a geometric shape and another had wings where the head would be.
no, they mean juggernaut star’s wings have been burnt away and only ragged stumps are there
An angel who can’t even let herself be free can’t have wings, can they? And when you think about it… We’ve never seen a Thorn Knight with a true form that expresses wings.
They’re all trapped in toxic, poisonous denial of self-want. The least useful kind of lie.
She bears the cost of Jagganoth’s invincibility (WoN 4-76) upon her true form.
Pity her! IA!
Hell yeah! That’s a super obscure connection. Hope it’s true!
Great nails were forged of angel’s feathers, and driven into Jagganoth’s flesh. It was thus that he is blessed with a body that is completely indestructible. Such that not even six demiurges could cut him.

If Metatron 1 originally wanted to obliterate all life on Throne, making Jagganoth un-killable was a damn good opening move.
Wings? Where are her eyes!
Why, they stud the wheels of the rest of 6 Juggernaut Star, and are but a little ways away.
DRESS!
White Chain is only shocked to learn she could have been manifesting clothes upon her true angelic form this entire time.
Rightly so, and rightly was 2 Michael so scornful of White Chain clinging to the putrid deeds and mores of humans. These aren’t even of White Flame; what good can come of them?
Human shapes, now human fashions, next come human thoughts and human passions.
It’s looks more like strips of flesh than cloth though
My first thought was why is my sister wearing strips of orange peel.
It’s called FASH-YUN, seeker. Look it up!
Ah, one of the gods in my prayer for forgiveness is UN-FASH.
Dress!!!~
I wonder, does the presence of clothes in the void, ie the spiritual space indicate shame on JS’s part? That protective gesture of the arm suggests so. JS is ashamed of what they are. Whereas White Chain, their dogmatism notwithstanding, is not. Some serious brainwashing by 2 Michael and Metatron has gone down, methinks.
Watch out for Jugger-Chan’s wheel White Chain
THE WHEEL!
Also note the charred remnants of the wings, and that Juggernaut Star looks like they’ve been crying.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been put up to this.
Behead a king who cannot die.
Send through the seven-headed beast’s territories a decoy of no importance.
Leave a chosen successor to an angel who will not kill them.
Spare a demiurge with no desire to rule.

Who wouldn’t cry, being jerked around like that?
“And they Broke him upon that wheel, until he alone could lift it.”
Is that quote from somewhere?
Wielder of Names 5-85
‘I will say it once more – I am you, and you are me.’
The Wheel turns over all things. The Void reveals purest Truth.
Remember – this shell is not your body.
Tired. So very tired.
It seems that everything is not as it seems…
sexysexy!!
Two sisters appear to be present.
I am not sure whether to be disappointed at the ending of the potential carnage or noting the poignancy of this moment.
Gentleness is best achieved through preservation in frost, after all.
(out of character: whoops, didn’t realize that White Chain pulled Juggernaut Star’s soul flame into the void)
…pardon me, just had a weird out of body experience there and tranced out. No idea how I came up with those thoughts.
Did one of the angels just yeet the other’s flame into the void? Fascinating…
If White Chain was criticized for looking “too human” as she looks now, I wonder what could be said for Juggernaut Star.
2 Michael also “looks human”; at least in his first appearance.
2 Michael had a human head and his body was a giant bird, but it is still a head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to looking human
Most angels at least have humanoid bodies. First. I’d imagine it’s convenient in a world designed (recently, not originally) around accommodating humans, and second, humans made the shells, of course they’d be humanoid. Plus Yisun is humanoid.

To put it in a correct order, humans are Yisunoid?
I daresay she could pass as Elven, tall, lithe, and beautiful as heck.
We often preach hardest what we need to learn most.
…How very tired you look, Sister. How very tired indeed. Is this even what you want anymore? Can you even remember?
You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you.
So this is coming back now!
One thing bugs me though: how did White Chain pull this stunt out? I am trying to think of any precendent for her both rodong the lightning and pulling someone out of their shell thing. Is it something angels can generally do? A bit confused here.
Juggernaut Star has pulled White Chain out of her shell before.
Angels untethered to a physical anchor will naturally inhabit the void. White chain reached from there to yank Juggernaut Star into the void with Her, leaving Juggernaut’s armor inanimate.
And that is indeed the shadow of Rayuba cast in the Void, that being Solomon’s palace behind them, or at least it’s shade. But the Arena casts none?
Mayhap it’s newness, intended ephemerality, and active and ongoing destruction render it too fleeting to cast much of a shadow into the void. One must imagine that Rayuba, cherished as it is by Lord Solomon, bearer of the word and ruler of a seventh of creation, would be both present and protected in the void.
There do appear to be shards of stone flying through the air.
OH NO! SHE’S HOT!
oh no
she’s hot
White chains exact thoughts when she went from wanting to punch Juggernaut in the face to wanting to kiss her on the lips in the span of 1 second
Slow down there, sir.
These are siblings, after all.
I will never criticize someone for finding a sibling attractive. It does sometimes mutually happen. I, my parents, my 16 siblings, and my over 50 nieces and nephews wouldn’t be who we are if it didn’t.
you wont, but i sure will
*shrugs*
Ideally you have 32 great-great-great grandparents. I have at most 6 and might only have 2.

I wonder how much of the dogmatism and maybe the violence is itself a facade?
I agree with Quieten, now is a chance for dialogue (with everybody in the material world wondering what is going on).
You are me, and I am you.
“Look at us, White Chain. Look at what they make us give.”
“Do you want mercy now? After all of this?”
“Would I get it?”
“…maybe we both need mercy and forgiveness.”
