BREAKER OF INFINITIES 4-146
Chapter: 4
Prim strode on, weary for a resting place. Surely the road had to go somewhere, she thought, otherwise there was no point to the road at all. Yet for every step she took, the ground beneath her feet seemed to stretch out three.
– Prim Masters the Road
Not a breakfast person it seems.
I just eat whatever’s in the fridge
The discovery that there are some (perhaps many!!) humans out there that are “not a Breakfast Person” was disturbing and revelatory.
Who are these strange exalted beings that can get up in the morning and not feel bound by immutable law to put fuel in their bodies?
If I didn’t have breakfast I would pass out.
Most people don’t have anything for breakfast on a daily basis – not that they avoid it, it’s the food that avoids them…
Some people don’t get up in the morning.
Touché.
I too skip most breakfasts in the morning, I’m just not hungry until like 11 / 12 o clock.
Who knew? Who *knew?*
She knew, of course. She knew, and knows, and will know.
Well, maybe I am hungry every morning, but I should wait a few hours. Because other way all this food just going to be in the toilet. I will be hungry again, but more miserable and with disgusting aftertaste in my mouth. So just a cup of coffee or tea. I think it’s some kind of curse sometimes.
lmao owned
lmao
with just a single ‘go away’ she banished one of the seven demigods
I suspect Jadis has simply left and it’s not the immediate moment after. Jadis has also teleported around so she may have even done that.
Alternatively, those believing this is all in Allison’s mind are correct and she’s dismissed her mentally.
A former demigod, I think. She was noted a few panels back as the FORMER holder of the word “MIND”.
Now she is The Bearer of the Shape. Traded a meaningless word for a loftier title, yes
well,that was easy
Finally some dang piece and quiet to eat my damn eggs. Who wants to choose breakfast when you can have it all, yummy yum.
Spoken like true Royalty.
Dang, should’ve tried that on Jagganoth.
Get rid of your genocidal maniacs with this one simple trick!
Demiurges hate it!
This is Jagganoth’s ultimate goal, is it not?
Wow, she made it just for you and you treat her like that? Smh
If she doesn’t technically exist, how did she make breakfast anyway?
Her Total Perspective Vortex machine can make breakfast too, why shouldn’t it?
Well it’d be really hardcore, but considering she’s omniscient, I suppose not so much. Her family spent generations attempting to accomplish what she did, so it would make some sense that she had some loyal supporters from that point.
Assuming she just stuck to the idea of “not existing” all the time (which is fair, being entombed in glass and all,) she could’ve just relayed a gargantuan amount of exact directives spanning eons into the future, with line 3,857,209,003 being simply, “make two trays of breakfast consisting of and place them in the atrium at such and such hour and minute.”
That’s a pretty cool thought, actually. A tome of highly precise commands that are followed like stricture and they’re just so this amber encased Demiurge can get off on trying to convert people into depressive nihilists and stuff.
minions
If she doesn’t technically exist, then who resurrected Alice?
Destroy all monsters. And then, perhaps a nice cup of tea?
Steady on.
One wants what one wants.
Testing out Mortal Kombat’s new finishing move set: “EXISTENTIALITY!
“
Hmph. All these Nietch and Platon fighters. They don’t have enough reality to me. Or do they ?
Camus slips and fails right at the end of his, and the game waits for you to reenter the button sequence to start it over again. And again. And again. And again. And again.
A most potent incantation of banishment. Shame it wouldn’t have worked on The Red God or that wannabe Sword King.
…PERHAPS WE’LL JUST TAKE THE COFFEE.
just realized this bitch is basically amazon alexa
“you do not yet realize the inherent emptiness of existence”
“alexa shut the fuck up”
“beep boop”
“Alexa, why is there a full three course breakfast on my doorstep?”
“Because I predict with 99.999% accuracy that it is what you will have ordered to go with your existential crisis.”
It seems that even in the face of the infinite illusions of choice and causality, breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day! Truly it has no equal!
A corpse cannot make a choice, it is true. They see All and yet Nothing, for they are quite blind!
Jadis does not understand.
Facing the perils which the universe has to throw at you is more manageable on a full stomach.
The fate of the multiverse would come down to one decision: pancakes or waffles.
Pancakes are a lunch meal, and waffles are for teatime. NEITHER!
Diehard muesli fan here. Bread is an alternative. Breakfast egg on sundays.
That was… easy?
This is maybe the funniest comic page I’ve ever seen
jadis: what do you want for breakfast
allison: for you to fuck off and leave me to have my existential crisis in peace
After lifetimes of searching, I have finally found a single, albeit incomplete, pearl of wisdom: Prim is Allison.
A light repast
a sword, a blast,
Away! Dice cast
Do the gods reincarnate in this universe?
There is no reincarnation. The wheel simply spins around again.
I noticed it some couple of years ago, or like that (probably more, since it was thee book 4 cover with accompanying text which made it pretty obvious); but with additional twist – it seems that not only Allison=Prim, but Zoss=Hansa. He is Royalty, he is a gruffy old man, and Allison’s journey was triggered by his death. Also he is a pipe-smoking badass, of course.
I don’t know why but I was reading this OTHER comic in which a forest God says I don’t exist and then gets killed … and then THIS ????
Well at least the forest guy was funny. Fuck your big momma tiddies Jadis xD
Allison’s reaction: :’(
Antimony’s reaction: 😐
Difference of their emotional state when receiving the information.
I was thinking of Coyotes statement too, heh. And he gets killed? I haven’t been reading Gunnerkrigg Court for a while.
What webcomic?
Gunnerkrigg Court, been going for a long time and updates often too!
You talking about Coyote from GK Court? I miss that little scamp! Loupe is a bit of a bully.
Throne was created from the Seed Bismuth, and Yisun never existed.
Sometimes the most important thing you can say to someone is “go away”.
This seems to further reinforce this whole thing being in part some sort of mind truck.
Also, if Jadis knew she was going to be told off, I guess she kept talking because to her, existence is one giant railroading, she has no choice but to select that dialogue or do that action.
Anyway, how is Allison going to know whether she picked the choice which wasn’t fated? Seems like Jadis is trying to test whether Allison can choose the path less travelled, to mix a bunch of metaphors.
You know, I was expecting something more wordy. But this makes more sense. I suppose one of the best responses to pessimistic nihilism is just “stfu.”
Ah yes, one of the most powerful spells of all: the legendary “Begone Thot”
Possibly the more powerful, if more esoteric cousin, ‘Begone, Thought’
Can someone who does not see choice as real truly discern if someone breaks the course of destiny? Can shattering the infinity be perceived by someone who has seen everything that they, without a reasonable doubt, know is in fact everything?
It is unknown. Thinking clearly can be helped by a cup of coffee with your breakfast.
Buzz Buzz
I imagine they would easily discern it by simply observing something unexpected to them. Really, they would be the first to know that the course of destiny has been broken.
In a similar thread to what others here have stated, Jadis does not have that sort of immediate perspective. Jadis is a being where the guise of choice is lost, being the one thing she can no longer see. Every atom of every moment stretching across the wheel from start to end is within her mind, a perfect image burned forevermore into her soul, viewed from an all-seeing point rather than a singular point. This is not simple foresight, where a change in course would be noticeable.
It’s entirely possible that, if Allison were to truly break the course of fate and alter her path, Jadis could very well not even perceive it. It would either be such a great shock that it’d completely break what remains of Jadis’s mind, or it would be purely nothing, a butterfly’s death upon the preverbal wind of the wheel.
Everything I’m saying could be wrong though. For I too am a slave to choice, crashing against the shores of time and the breeze of the wheel just as anyone else is. All that is certain, is that Allison is the only one with the power to even possibly alter fate, and perhaps, that is why Jadis is necessary. As a contrast. Almost an equal. The fork in the road.
That makes sense. The suggestion of the “cycles” is that Zoss is going back and choosing a different successor each time, so if Jadis has been like this since well before Allison, or anyone in that moment of time, was chosen then Jadis would be surprised or uncertain each time.
There are several possible answers to this:
1. Jadis is aware of the loops and how each loop and different successor leads to the next along the entirety of that path.
2. Jadis’ non-existence of being is updated each time with the new path. It might be a new path from her original use of the machine but she doesn’t need to use the machine again to update, her entire being simply updates.
3. Zoss has been able to turn back time but not exactly alter it’s course, which is the trap. He hands off his power in the hopes a successor can alter it where he is unable
Whatever the case, it’s difficult to believe that any power Zoss has is a power that Jadis would not be aware of since she would understand all of history as perfectly as the present and future. But just because she might know Zoss’ power doesn’t necessarily mean she can choose to use it if the trap of all this has been to completely lock her being into actions that don’t use them.
In re “Whatever the case, it’s difficult to believe that any power Zoss has is a power that Jadis would not be aware of since she would understand all of history as perfectly as the present and future.”, knowing overlaps with but is not coterminous with understanding.
I’m thinking 3.
The king that masters the wheel, cannot break it.
