Delayed update 6/19
Hi ya’ll, next update will be 6/26.
To offer some clarity about the update schedule, I’ve had really shortened work weeks recently due to my (very young) kids being out of childcare a lot for public holidays or school development days. This week, for example, it’s Juneteenth (no childcare) and we’re also doing emergency childcare for a friend. I’ve also been working on finishing the recent edition of my role playing game magazine (which is available now!) and didn’t expect it to consume so much of my time this week.
At the start of the year, I grappled with insane burnout. Part of this was trying to pace myself to finish the comic by next year (I figured with around a hundred pages left, it would take me a year and a bit with two updates a week, minus holidays, etc). Every time I’ve pushed myself to do a double page update a week at this time in my life, it’s been very hard to hit the mark without exhausting myself. Being a parent means I’m often up at 6am with the kids (who are both under 5), at work by 8:30/9, cooking at 4, hanging out with the kids until bedtime at 8:30, then having my only time to myself from around 8:30-10. If I have any doctors appointments, errands, personal time, time to eat, or chores to do, they have to fit in my working time from 9-4. Trying to fit what could be 20 hours of ass in the chair drawing in that time was extremely tight and often led to me working late. I was put in an extremely bad mental health state for around a month or so and decided to pull back to 1 page a week, which immediately improved things. That has left me a little time in the start of my week which I’ve used to resume RPG work (which I can work on at a more flexible pace), or take on client work (for professional tv/video game studios most recently) but I’m still trying to find a good balance. If you ever see me doing illustration or role playing games work, that’s because it is (piecemeal) much easier to fit into my week than comics.
I’m also trying to wrap this comic of 13+ years. The pacing has been extremely hard for weekly readers to follow I think, due to this being a prolonged action scene with a lot of movement, that requires specific page pacing that’s going to suck reading week to week. The work has therefore been a little brutal for me at times, especially with the level of detail on some of these pages. I trust the outline and work that I’ve done to carry these part of the comic to its conclusion but I’d ask you to bear with me.
I could take a prolonged break of a month or two, then release 4-8 pages at once (like I did last year), which would help the pacing issues, but does not match how people mostly engage with and consume media content nowadays (as fast as possible and on a regular schedule). When I last did this, it was also intensely stressful to stretch my work over so long a period, so I think that’s a no go for now.
Anyway, I just wanted to be clear about the situation. I would rather consistently update at a pace that’s healthy for me and finish strong rather than self destruct trying to sprint for the finish. There’s a reason not many long running comic series get finished (and not many web comics), and that’s because they are a tremendous, overwhelming amount of work that is an intensely heavy burden for one person. I think that’s partly why they are so unique and beautiful though.
Thanks for reading – we’ll be back next week strong and we will continue until it is done – likely next year or early 2028.
Cheers,
Tom
take care of yourself!!! I would rather wait longer than have you kill yourself from work 🙂
please take as much time as you need holy shit. I can’t imagine having to juggle all that at once. I wish you could do the monthly updates instead if that was more helpful but I understand that our media environment isn’t very kind to that sort of thing. as long as you find a good balance that fits well with your schedule and doesn’t burn you the fuck out while trying to finish this comic, that’s plenty good enough for me (and hopefully many others). I will stay excited to see this comic through to the end and any other projects you got cooking.
We thinks time taken for yonder health is well deserved, no apologies need friend. <3
Take as much time as you need! I don’t speak for everyone, but I’d much rather enjoy what you want to make in the time you want to make it rather than anything created on strict deadlines. Even if it took ten more years, they’d be ten happy years of more of your work.
Will wait till 2040 if necessary. Every page is worth the wait. Take the time you need!
Take your time and take care of yourself.
I really admire you for being able to do so many things at once; I wish I had your strength. Please take the time you need; we are all here for the journey and we’re not going to disappear whether it takes you a bit less or a bit more time to finish.
All of that is very understandable, and you abaolutely deserve to go at this at the pace that is most comfortable for you and works best for you.
Personally, I really appreciate this comic for mainly being focused on how it will be as a final product, and not as much going for the week-to-week readers. I really like the approach towards that, and I believe most people are generally completely fine with how that results in us weekly readers not always getting a big treat every update. It’s a sad fact that active negative opinions will always be louder than positive passive ones
So sorry to hear that you were and at times are, under such stress. I know your fans and fans of your work are very grateful. This is a free comic that has a great story.
Whenever I wanna get the full feel of the scene, I just go back a chapter and read from there. Don’t worry about pacing during releases when the final product will flow.
People should be and are grateful for you and your work. Take your time!
Take care of yourself!
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that we want you to enjoy making KSBD and are fine to wait!
Wait you work for 8 hours a day and still put out this much content? You’re are an insane man, truly one of kind!
Take as much time as you need!
I think most of the people here agree that we’d prefer for you to make sure this comic ends up something you’ll be happy with, as those that stuck with it up until now love what you love making. If tying this 13 year old story( that’s entirely yours, not matter what matter what people may demand and ask of you) together in a satisfying manner takes a few more months or years and a personal break or two, we’ll remain here all the same, happy that you made sure it’s as close to how you wanted it as possible.
If you need to distance yourself for a while, hell even if you call it quits (though from what I’ve seen and read here, I doubt you will) to enjoy life and making things again, please do so. I’d find people who’d begrudge you for something like that not worth it. If making K6BD ever becomes something you feel like you’re forced to do, I hope you only return to it only when you start enjoying it again and when it wouldn’t affect you negatively, because I know how turning something fun into an obligation can entirely spoil it.
I doubt that I speak only for myself when I say I want you to do what’s best for you, as only then you’ll be able to do what’s best for your art.
You don’t need to explain! This comic is so rad I’d keep coming back even if there was no update for a year. Take care of yourself! I love your work! Stay healthy!
I’ve been reading this since 2018 and I remember when you posted about your kids being born. Not to get too parasocial, but take care of yourself and make the art the way you need to. K6BD is incredible and that won’t change if you slow down.
We appreciate the transparency and as others have said, it’s amazing that you’ve gotten this far with two young children and a full-time job! You’ve been putting out content like KSBD is your main gig. Take care of yourself and your family before the webcomic- you don’t want to miss out on the kids growing up.
Ah, this is exactly why it’s nice you have RSS, I’ll see it when it’s there 🙂 All good, thanks for your amazing work.
Comic is awesome however you release it! We’ve been here for years – we’re not going to leave because you prioritize your life a little more. Be well man.
Take as much time as you need to finish this kickass piece of art and come out of it alive.

Take care of yourself and take all the breaks you need man. We’ll all be there to consume the sludge when you get back.
It’s truly amazing that K6BD has gone this far from the humble beginnings in MSPA forums. And it’s all thanks to your unwavering efforts, Tom. No need to apologize. Stretching out K6BD is not a problem for me, just means more time to appreciate the comic I love. And don’t listen to the jackasses in the comment section, I’ve hd no problems following the pacing of this action scene. They’re just bitter losers.
Tom, take that hiatus and build a backlog! We just got a fresh Games for Freaks – we’ll be eating just fine this summer.
Like all the other commenters said, take care of yourself 🙂
I follow your work through RSS, and only check it out two or three time per month (this is also related to kid :)), so the schedule is not a problem, and I hope I’m not the only one to not be bothered when there isn’t any update in multiple weeks.
It’s been amazing what you’re doing but don’t overly push yourself. I’m honestly quite happy with a slower update schedule, and I know a handful that would feel similarly. I really enjoy savoring the art, and rereading the last page each week to refresh myself for the Friday update. Even if you moved to once every 2 weeks I’d be a happy camper. Keep on making amazing art! I’ll be there no matter what it looks like
good for you to be taking your time! yeesssss
