Wow. What a remarkably terrible decision. Also one that basically destroys her as a character.
Still very much in line with Labyrinth though. Allison’s giving up control for the illusion of it. As Jareth once said, ‘Let me rule you, and I will be your slave.’
No, if you look back a page you’ll see that the people Incubus aided still carry their same vices, except exagerated. I think that this will only make her less hesitant to taking action, bolder, and opening her up to Incubus’s corruption. Judging by the rest of this ‘verse they’ll still be able to look back with bitterness at the rotten deal they made and reflect on it, but unlike them, AL-YIS-UN is in a position to tell him to fuck off and rip him out of her skull. It’s not like she needs his power, only his uninhibited nature.
What does it matter if she keeps her own vices, if she is no longer the motive force for her actions. Read the words on this page:
“I’ll make you my emissary.” – Allison will be on Incubus’ mission
“Put a little of my mind into yours.” – Incubus flat out says that he’s going to mind control her.
And this after her party pledged their to support to her, because she was herself. Allison just rolled that into a ball and chucked it in the garbage.
Allow me to disagree.
And here’s why.
Allison has, from the start, been shown to be nervous, afraid even, struggling to maintain as much control over her life as she can yet keenly aware that she has almost none. Both before and after she received the key.
It’s a feeling I know well, of wishing for control and feeling like you’re being pulled along by outside forces regardless of your wishes, and the few times you do get to decide something it always feels like it doesn’t make any difference.
And then someone comes along and says they can help you, make all the nagging worries go away, give you the confidence you wish you had, they offer you all the things that you know you need in order to be content, to be happy, the things you need in order to be able to love yourself. And you know that this person is telling the truth, they really can give you all this.
I do not know if I would accept such an offer as enthusiastically as Al-Yis-Un does here, but I do know that it would be the greatest temptation imaginable for me, and I would not trust myself to decline the offer.
Allison began her quest with an understandable narrative goal: get home. Once she gained the ability to go home at will, it became: rescue the princess (although in her case, the princess is her boyfriend). It had seemed that this was evolving into generally being a hero (her new mechanic states as much, shortly after she was introduced), something Throne seemed to be in dire need of. Instead we have…. this.
Using her power made her feel in control, and she’d like to feel it again.
So she’s revealed that she’s not in this for Zaid, or for the oppressed masses of the multiverse, or really anyone but herself. She’d likes to wield power because it makes her feel good. Presumably more power would make her feel even better. That being the case, what separates her from the demiurges? The fact that she hasn’t committed atrocities yet (note that she’s off to a good start on that by killing Mottom and then not managing the resulting power vacuum)? Their motivation appears to be the same.
Basically, Allison went from hero to, at best, a blood knight, and at worst, the very thing she’s fighting, in a single page.
“The Idiot: unshod and ungirded, he grasped at power, and found himself burned.”
-Goblin Proverb
I can’t decide if this applies to Allison for accepting Incubus’s offer, or Incubus for trying to make the Rising King his emissary. Perhaps the master key will…disagree…with what Incubus is trying to do to ALL-ISUN’s mind.
The plot thickens, like Mochi no less. I wonder how where and when this is going to bite her in the ass.
Though it shows us that two of the demi urgest want her on their side rather then to work against her. I guess that says something for how much they fear Jaggarnoth.
Perhaps it was not the wisest of decisions for AL-YISUN to ally herself with LUST. But than again, true Royalty must know how to maneuver in the deep politics of nobility.
On one hand, this feels like a mistake. On the other hand, she’s literally taking on the masters of all creation here, she needs every scrap of power she can get her hands on. “Playing it safe” isn’t really an option.
It’s a tradition held over from when comics were hand-lettered. People are so used to it, that if you break from it, you had better have a good reason, especially if you want a publisher to print your comic on paper later.
It made it easier for the letterer to write legible text in the balloons, which were often oddly shaped. Sadly, it’s done a lot to contribute to the idea that comics are suitable for early readers, and thus “just for kids.”
This will not well for Incubus, you just know it…
Thank you!
So many people are calling out Alison for her Icarian recklessness, that they seem to forget that it is Incubus who is the lesser god.
It should be noted that Alison has heard of the prophecy, from both White Chain and Zoss. She knows that she must kill Incubus to claim her throne.
That die was cast the moment she chose King.
Now it’s just a matter of how much use she can get out of him before she has to destroy him.
My question is, does he know that she knows?
Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. I wasn’t expecting that.
That’s the fantasy, apparently – but I’m getting more of a “Phantom of the Opera” vibe from this transaction…
We need some kind of inspiring yet ominous instrumental song to go with this emotional outburst. Suggestion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bTM9aCEqes
Alternatively:
“Are ready? Are you…reeeeeeeady? Transformation central! Reformation central! Transmorgrification central! Can you feel it? You’re changing, you’re changing, you’re changing alright. I hope you’re satisfied.
“Because if you ain’t, don’t blame me. You can blame my friends on the ooootheeeeer siiiiiiiiiide!”
This is not going to work out well.

In my experience, proverbs about idiots getting burned apply to everyone.
Ill advised.
Don’t worry Ally, you’ll care later.
While her confidence is laudable, I dare say that our new King aught to have considered more before chaining herself to such a leech.
She’s playing a dangerous game, where desperate gambits that risk ones life are actually the only way to survive.
The plot thickens, like Mochi no less. I wonder how where and when this is going to bite her in the ass.

Sudden wardrobe changes are sudden, but this is the dreamworld, so transitions are optional.
Well… SHIT.
Perhaps it was not the wisest of decisions for AL-YISUN to ally herself with LUST. But than again, true Royalty must know how to maneuver in the deep politics of nobility.
Oh Allison Ruth, you fool child, what have you done.
Incubus gains both an ally and an Ally.
Shortcuts, fools believe, are an excellent idea
Long cuts are by far a better option, and very useful for dividing those who offer shortcuts to fools
Nope not gonna regret this oooone bit.
Incubus will outlive the other six, I will bet.
I said the same of Mottom.
How much black glass would you wager your guess is superior to mine?
Ah, shit.
Fighting gods by daylight, cutting hair by moonlight, mostly bleeding from a big fight, she is the one called KILL SIX BILLION DEMONS!
I shall fall into all the traps to understand, suffer, triumph and lastly rescue.
On one hand, this feels like a mistake. On the other hand, she’s literally taking on the masters of all creation here, she needs every scrap of power she can get her hands on. “Playing it safe” isn’t really an option.
I doubt Incubus thought his cunning plan all the way through here. This will end badly for him.
It’s never a good idea to give someone rent-free space in your head.
How does one charge rent for such a thing? I want in on that! Gods know I have plenty of room…
Incubus signs his own death warrant with an ATTAGIRL.
And I just noticed that all the writing is in all caps … everywhere … in almost every comic. Why is that? Could anyone enlighten me?
That’s a standard thing, done for ease of reading. Capital letters are much easier to distinguish than lowercase ones.
I imagine it is easier to read this way.

Legibility.
Interesting! Thank you all for your responses.
