Using the thorny armor and anger to keep people from seeing who you are inside. Sounds like me twenty years ago. Hope you find some comfort with yourself, Juggernaut.
Wouldn’t trust her to be nice just because she’s pretty, look at White chain’s wings and then look at Juggernaut’s tiny almost rotten wings. There’s either a story behind that where those things got plucked, or it’s a reflection of her own rejection of “Angelhood”.
I think it’s a good symbol of her self-hatred and denial of her own nature in compliance to an arbitrary ruleset in order to be accepted in the angel/thorn society.
And because she had to break her own sense of self, she fanaticized and went the extra mile.
Or maybe, like some have speculated, maybe we now know where the feathers that make Jaggy invulnerable come from.
(My personal headcannon is that they come from Metatron himself, and that the poor sob is gonna have to kick the bucket for Jag’s plot armor to go away)
White Chain tends to be honorable to a fault when being herself. So even if it’s Juggernaut Star, if their opponent is just sitting there making no move to defend themself she’s not the type to lay into. She has done so twice as far as we’ve seen; once a few pages earlier threatening Allison while she was down and before that when she was about to beat that petal knight to death with a table, but immediately felt terrible about it afterwards both times once she came to her senses.
Saul upon the Road, Beggar-Knight of The Librarian Mendicant Order
Hwæt! Look here, see how the Skald-Scribe of Al-Yisun’s saga can surprise us yet again, despite us sitting and regarding closely this tale.
One would think we would be most wise and cognisant of the tricks this one would use, but Lo, once again, this fresh revelation is both unexpected and still makes perfect sense.
Let us reflect upon this, and what it teaches of the Work and Nature of YISUN, the consummate liar.
Other observant personages in this metaphorical, digital space that serves as a speaking-house, in which we all have born witness to this tale (a venue that would be certain to delight YISUN if ever there was one, for what are metaphors if not wonderfully elaborate lies?) have noted that we have seen Juggernaut Star’s void form before, at length, and but for a single slip shortly after Auntie Murder the Gods and Topple Their Thrones’ heroically triumphant mistake, they don’t look like this. My assumption, given the situations involved at all points, is that the Speaker for Thorns’ usual, magnificently Thorny appearance requires an act of will to maintain – a trivial one, I would imagine, given what must surely be many billions upon billions of mortal years (I do wish, speaking purely as a scholar, that 2 Michael’s admirable and impressively long list of flaws did not include such a lack of specificity when it comes to kalpa) spent forming this habit, but an act of will nevertheless, such that when surprised, or tired, they may not be able to maintain it.
Thus, I assume that in this case, Juggernaut has not had time to put their face on, so to speak. It quite tickles me that what we are seeing could in all likelihood be compared to someone being caught out and made to participate in important business with their hair still in rollers.
Unrelated to any of these points – is Juggernaut Star, in some impossible way, actually *Jadis*? They both have vast knowledge of the true nature of the Universe, such that they have been driven mad. And Juggernaut Star has a halo, something that is normally only seen in demiurges, as several of our friends here have noted.
Ooh, NICE. I was about to make fun of White Chain for hesitating just long enough for Juggernaut to kick her ass, but then I finally realized that they’re not in the arena anymore! White Chain didn’t just seperate Juggernaut from her armor, she completely REMOVED the both of them from the entire plane (a nice bit of delegation, I must say). With Juggernaut unable to kill Allison herself, and unable to coerce White Chain into doing so, the fight was already effectively ended, as Juggernaut has no reason to continue. Technically, I don’t really think White Chain does either, so presumably that running punch was just indended to be for fun & spite.
Well this was not what I expected. I mean, I didn’t know what to expect, but whatever it was, it wasn’t White Chain yanking out Juggy Star’s true self.
And yes, she looks very tired…
But as White Chain stops in her tracks, I too admonish vigilance. Juggernaut Star has never been one to nobly offer an opponent a chance to pick a sword back up, etc. Much more like the type to kick and kick again someone when they’re down.
My guess is the wheel can be instantly inhabited by J-Star, and turned on White Chain?
And yeah, where the heck are they? Not the purple one’s arena, that’s for sure.
I for one cannot wait for the next arc where White Chain fiercely validates Juggernaut Star despite their differences but won’t accept the literal exact same validations herself from anybody, Juggernaut included.
Ok, I have to ask: If only an angel can beat another angel, how did Zoss beat all those angels?
Clearly them stony ones are beatable by others of the non-geological variety, providing said organic entities are sufficiently empowered and determined.
There IS always the possibility that “only an angle can beat another angel” is referring to permanently killing one- as we have seen even the ones Zoss beat to death could theoretically come back given enough time.
If that is the takeaway you got from this comic, perhaps you should go seek assistance from someone who specializes in emotional counseling. It’s clear the entire theme of this story completely went over your head.
I despise people who claim good art is X-phobic when there are people of a certain demographic are portrayed as anything less than glittering, idolic champions. Representation and exploration of themes (especially gender and sexuality themes) requires looking at the good and the bad. Not just the good.
82 White Chain Returns to Subdue Evil’s arcs are a clear allusion to the difficulties of someone who has dysphoria and image issues. She is an entity that is supposed to be unchanging and decidedly masculine by both culture and design, yet she is not. White Chain is a protagonist, and she is very clearly struggling with both her identity as well as her myriad of duties. Only very recently has she started coming to terms with what she is, and it is rightfully a hard road for her (as it is IRL). The fact that one of her brothers stepped forward and not only defended her at risk to himself, but essentially validated her identity (as female) is a huge pro-trans statement.
6 Juggernaut Star Scours the Universe is an allusion to someone who has clearly not accepted what they are. They actively hide what they feel and are becoming. They are afraid, and very probably seek to destroy the other successor races explicitly because they feel as if they have been tainted by humans, devils, and servants. They are explicitly an antagonist, a very strong one, and act as a counterbalance, tempter, and rival to White chain (as well as acting as a powerful antagonist to the cast as a whole since the very first chapter). They are a nod to the fear, angst, and self-loathing that plagues many many trans people… and may even be redeemed by the end of this arc. Juggernaut Star is the negative of being trans, and their opposition to (and by) White Chain highlights the struggles every transman and transwoman goes through, often on a daily basis.
It’s frankly kind of insulting when you claim this comic is transpobic (or homophobic). You couldn’t get fucking further than the truth.
Uggo, who are you directing your comment towards? I’ve seen a few commenters making some at best tired and at worst transphobic comments. Are you criticizing Abaddon as a transphobe? Seriously?
As Jamini rightly points out above, the emplotment for both White Chain and Juggernaut Star is layered, complex, and touches on struggles and issues that lots of trans folks – myself very much included – have experienced ourselves. Both characters are held up to incredibly restrictive standards of who they are told they must be and how they should present themselves, and both chafe under it in different ways.
White Chain struggles with accepting herself, and reconciling the beliefs and values that she holds and that she’s fighting for with the way the world and her kin expect her to do those things. She’s begun to accept herself more and more as time goes on, and to figure out how to be herself without compromising what she believes in. She has friends and kin around her that are supporting her in that effort. And yeah, it’s been messy, and it’s hurt. I know trans kids who are 14 and trans folks who are in their 70s, and all points in between, and I’ve yet to meet one who didn’t face some type of struggle in accepting who they are internally.
Juggernaut Star is a very, very dark mirror. They (sticking with neutral pronouns for now as it still isn’t clear how JS sees themselves other than as a scourge for the thorn knights) fight themselves with just as much anger as they fight everything else. They swallowed the line they were fed by Metatron and Micheal that they should only ever be as they were told to be at the moment of their birth at Koss’ hand. Rather than accept themselves they doubled down on crushing and wiping away anything that makes them feel as anything other than they are desperately pretending to be. Over the kalpa that have passed, this has twisted Juggernaut Star. Unfortunately a lot of queer and marginal communities can point to members that have turned to self-hatred and denial instead of self-acceptance. Where White Chain has found ways to grow – however slowly – JS can’t or won’t let themself. Their hate is powerful and terrifying. The mask they show to the world – the stripped skull pierced through with spikes – is a lie. When JS was exhausted after facing Auntie Maya the mask slipped. Same again when JS flashed back to being punished by Michael and the thorns for their actions and disobedience. Same again now. Showing a delicate face now is a striking artistic contrast to the visage of horror JS has maintained in almost every other instance, and it’s aimed at the reader to make that discrepancy stand out as much as possible. I can’t think of a time that either WC or JS have been portrayed as some type of eye candy, so I really don’t get where the “Also, you want to fuck us…” comment is coming from.
I’m not trying to discount that you’re having a negative reaction to the story right now Uggo, but I legitimately do not understand where you’re coming from.
[insert surpised pikachu meme) I… did not see nor foretell this
Wow JS got hot, and looks none too happy about it.
its war then…
I don’t think we’re in the arena anymore.
Nor Kansas, neither.
Oh, wow!! Not how I was expecting the Thorn to look
You are what you hate most, thorn. No knowledge, no power, will make you into the circle, pure, infertile. You cannot lie now.
Using the thorny armor and anger to keep people from seeing who you are inside. Sounds like me twenty years ago. Hope you find some comfort with yourself, Juggernaut.
Holy crap… JUGGERNAUT STAR HAS TOES!?
Oh you mean the foot spikes? No, wait! Those are toes!
Dat not Juggernaught star, right? Else this is the worst bonner. Damn Angels fucking up my hetero gains again.

She looks ashamed at being literally outed.

I dont think it is Jadis, but with the thorns plotting a wiping of the universal slate, anything could have been forged in the fires of that hatred
It’s a BEE-UuUUuuTIFUL LA-DY.
“Don’t be intimidated, just imagine them without their armor.”
…
“Oh no! She’s hot!”
I just realized that I am like the… sixth person to make this joke. I feel deeply ashamed.
And will accept the name “6 Repeats the Word of Others”

Big oooooooooooof from Alison and the crew
She lookin elegant as fuuujuuk
Orange peel dress

Clearly them stony ones are beatable by others of the non-geological variety, providing said organic entities are sufficiently empowered and determined.
Yisun being the biggest liar of all, we should take affirmations with several grains of salt, including alt-text.
Zoss reportedly slaughtered angels left and right by himself, and the seven can probably increment angels as well should they so desire.
There IS always the possibility that “only an angle can beat another angel” is referring to permanently killing one- as we have seen even the ones Zoss beat to death could theoretically come back given enough time.
“I-is it weird that I feel bad for her?”
We get it, you think trans people are perverts who make reality less good. You’re an asshole. Also, you want to fuck us…
God, I wanted to like this comic, but it’s so transphobic.

wait, who/what is that giant thing in the distance
Those seem to be a common fixture of the void. Imprints of god corpses, maybe.
Well I managed to read the entire comic in one day and I very much look forward to the next page. Love it.
DUMMY THICC
