Translation: Your spine was severely cut up, your arm got twisted so hard it just flew off, you lost so much blood your body didn’t have enough fluid inside, causing your veins to shrink and every cell in your body began dying. Your god-powers tried to heal you but you’re a noob so the energy meant to heal you gathered unhealthily in your leg, which we had to amputate as a result. After that, we basically rebuilt your entire body from the ground up. So, you okay?
The “does it still hurt?” seems somehow VERY meaningful considering it’s an answer to Allison saying “It hurts”, and I’m not sure if ‘yes’ or ‘no’ would be the better response here…
“Your spiritual core was unrefined” What was White Chain’s martial arts training even doing, then? Isn’t her style supposed to be about the refining of spiritual power so that it can be used to punch people?
Well, going on the entire last adventure was something of a “Luke leaving Dagobah to save his friends at Cloud City” moment. I’m sure White Chain’s training helped but there was definitely a sense that Allison made her move before her training was complete.
i mean it has to be said that allison should have been dead in every single frame after separation from the tripartate fusion. Her meridians were aligned and her key worked. This is much more than nothing.
I agree with Machival- as you recall White Chain tried to stop Allison from going to the tournament in the first place. And then was so upset at her that they even had a punch-up to settle their differences.
But to add to that, improving your spirituality is about more than punching people (or bisecting them with a sword). The comic has repeatedly shown us people who are next-level badasses, and yet continuously trash-talk melee combat, and wish to be noodle-vendors.
Jaganoth is the biggest beefy-boi there is, but he’s not royalty. Zoss, who I’m sure could suplex Jaggy-boi without break a sweat, said IN HIS OWN WORDS that even at his best he couldn’t fight the wheel, and had to take another path.
Having an “unrefined spiritual core” could mean that Allison’s progress on the path to enlightenment is terrible, even if she did get very good at punching people.
Can I just say I love this comic. I’ve been reading this for years and it has NOT ONCE let me down. It scratches all the right itches and I appreciate the effort put into it.
I would love to see this animated or experience it in a videogame.
people in these comments making a huge fuss about this being reality or a projection without noticing that reality is just a projection of atum anyway or that the multi-part universe is only one of the great lies told by al-yis-un
This reminds me so vividly of when they took my splint off from my broken elbow. I had to have surgery and I was in a splint for two weeks and I didn’t move my arm at all that entire time. When they took it off my arm was so thin and pale, it felt like I could break it again just by moving it. I could see all the metal they put on my bones, jutting out and making the skin protrude. It’s the most terrified I’ve ever been of my own body.
She did all that, and yet didn’t even think to replace her blood with molten gold? What a ripoff! This wouldn’t have happened if she went to a hospital owned by Lord Mammon (may He Rest In Peace). I might’ve even been able to send her some chimera grapes as a get-well-soon gift!
“They speak that time heal all wounds, but what of the scars? What of the eons of hurt logged unto your heart as it feebly beats to keep you alive? I can remove them, Jorn. I can heal you, make you WHOLE, return you to who you truly are without the bagage of time and pain.”
Despite the tears in his eyes, Jorn saw clearly for the first time in remembrance. He grinned, as warm pools flew down his cold cheeks and his eyelashes gently swept the weep. He spoke with clarity unbound.
“What is broken may be made whole, what is lost may be found… But I am not broken, I AM whole… I am my scars, and my heart still beats. I may never have been found, but that does not mean I am lost. I might not know where I am going, but I KNOW I will get there.”
– The Vermillion Emperor and the Ancient of Warmth.
the last thing we heard allison say was “it hurts”. my guess is that jadis only understands hurt as a physical, material circumstance, and took it literally, with no accounting for the depth of what allison actually meant. jadis is still a demiurge, after all, and even if she’s nicer than the others, being detached from her humanity is basically in the job description.
This comic is a masterpiece.
honestly, marvel and DC should learn a thing or two from it.
Unique, inovative, compelling, speculative, to name a few things.
I regard this as a teasure build on the effort, tears and blood of its maker.
Without question the best webcomic I have read, and those aren´t few. Perhaps one of the best comics in overal quality, from story to art that I can recall, and i have read a lot of those. Frankly ahead of its time.
While thinking about it, i was wondering to which other media narrative can this epic tale be compared to. Movies like “the Matrix” or “Dark city” seem to be evocative of the theme of waking up to a bigger reality, but ultimately fall short in embracing their more mythological aspects, and i find Allison to be a much more compelling character than a “blank slate” like Neo since she portrays her own personality quite extensively in her experience.
It´s White Chain seems to quick more ass than Morpheus while sustaining a critical role, and on the romantic side things seem quite chaotic, for obvious reasons.
The loss of trophy-scars is but a shadow of so much else the future breaker-of-wheels has lost. Though such things may be earned once more, we dread for what cannot be reclaimed so easily.
Though in my more personal experience, there are those who would gladly discard their scars if allowed to, and those who cling so tightly they would rather have the wounds reopen than see the lingering mark fade. I belive this to relate to where one falls on a sliding scale of Wheel-Turning Sage King to Buddha.

Thank you for translating it for people who don’t know medical lingo like me. No wonder Allison has lost all her swole.

Kudos for the detail on the post-coma body. It’s creepily accurate.

Losing all those gains is the real pain. I understand.
Losing my Swole-ligion.

Jadis has the power to steal your swole, truly a most fearsome ability.
Allison looks a lot like Jadis herself, actually. Even in the face. What’s up with that?

Mendicant is observant.
I think these pages are and will be the most ripping indictment of allison’s character we’ve seen in this entire tale.
“Is your pain so especially bad?”

That smile is worrying.
Maybe she’s in her mind, and what we are looking at is her decimated spiritual self.
Um…excuse me…What you mean “the Machine”? Why is that CAPITALIZED???
She did all that, and yet didn’t even think to replace her blood with molten gold? What a ripoff! This wouldn’t have happened if she went to a hospital owned by Lord Mammon (may He Rest In Peace). I might’ve even been able to send her some chimera grapes as a get-well-soon gift!
The one who Saw. Who wished to Know, and paid steeply for it. We find her fascinating. We also appreciate her taste in geometric shapes.

Nooo, she lost all the muscles! Time to hit the gym for another year and get back to that buff warrior monk state.
I am so insanely suspicious of what’s happening!
Everything does.
Forget not the cover.

not the news you want to wake up to!!!
wondering about how much time passed. my hair took about 4 years to get that long o.o
Something in me is suggesting she still answer “Yes”
Something further is suggesting this is all a ‘hypothetical’ that could easily be taken away from Allison at a moment’s notice…
