Moving forward
The next few weeks might be rocky for updates (at least until the first week of August). In no particular order, I am going to be moving out of Japan, having a cousin by to visit, and finishing coloring the remainder of the black and white pages and re-drawing a few more in preparation for attempting to publish this thing.
The retro-active stuff will probably be added over the next three weeks. There’s nothing new added except for a two page spread which should clear up a lot of confusion for new readers as well as giving us an actual proper view of Throne. I’ll make sure there’s proper notification when it’s added.
Other things:
1. Have started planning the KSBD Patreon. There isn’t one right now because I try very hard not to take on work that I can’t deliver on. Goals will 100% be getting me to draw the comic full time (2-3 updates a week), with additional stuff being a (pdf) RPG ruleset and setting bible (no promise on the quality of the rules), pin-up art, art tutorials, etc. If you can pay me for it, I can and will grind out a graphic novel (80-100 pages) a year of Kill Six Billion Demons.
2. Looking to try and publish late this year through a fairly well-known US comic company. More info when I can tell you more about this. The timing will be very contingent on when I can wrap up the retroactive content, which, while on track, is still a lot of work to go.
3. I may run guest art while I’m updating things. If you’re interested in doing guest art, please contact me on twitter or through my tumblr. This can be anything you like, from comic to pinups, but I will vet it and take it seriously as an opportunity for promotion.
EDIT: First batch of recolors (from chapter 2 page 2) up. Had to fix up a ton of old art.
Have you considered getting someone to ink your work so you can focus on the story and art? There’s even an award for inkers! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkwell_Awards
I would, but I don’t really do pencils persay, it’s all digital and the roughs are super, super rough.
Just regarding your comment about RPG rules being hard to write, I would recommend starting off small, and maybe looking to newer systems for the improvements they’ve made to how games typically work. For example, John Harper’s World of Dungeons is a simple fully-functional, open-source 4-page version of Dungeon World, which used Apocalypse World mechanics for a DnD-like experience:
http://www.dungeon-world.com/downloads/
The simpler the system, the less you have to worry about emergent effects on balance or indecipherable rules, and particularly given the things Powered-By-The-Apocalypse games strip out, like initiative, observation checks, GMs having to set difficulties or even GM rolling dice. People have already written free Planescape, Star Wars, etc ports of World of Dungeons. Of course, every set of rules endeavors for a different sort of play experience, and Apocalypse games (including World of Dungeons) are designed for open worlds where the narrative is strongly driven by the player character’s choices and actions.
Anyway, I’m just saying: writing RPG rules should be fun rather than scary, and thus give you time to think about your incredibly wonderful and decadent setting. When I look at short games like World of Dungeons (or John Harper’s equally excellent Lady Blackbird), it seems a lot more doable.
I am a really strong advocate of minimalist Patreon campaigns for web comics. Mine offers almost nothing beyond “you support me drawing the comic” and has crawled up to the point where it pays my rent on a productive month. (Which I have not been having lately but that’s another story.)
Seriously. I’ll be doing a kickstarter for the concluding volume of my comic soon. I asked my patrons if they wanted to see a special discount on it or something. The response was a pretty unanimous “nah, if we want the atoms we’ll happily pay full price for them.”
(Stuff beyond ‘I keep drawing this comic you like’: patrons get PDFs of the previous collections, also WIPs, pages the minute I finish them vs. waiting for the buffer to drop them, and the occasional high-res copy of a crazy detailed spread.)
That’s my thoughts on Patreon; take them or leave them. I can gladly expand on them if you want.
I also might be up for some guest art. Gotta get back up to speed on my own comic first though.
I have read your content and don’t understand anything, but I can recommend a website. You may have heard the name of writing, I am actually a professional writer The website that taught me how to work is 7 dollar essay legit From this website, not only me but also you can benefit a lot from this website. We actually work with this type of writing. We give students this type of writing according to their content.
Toady picked up Patreon for DF recently and it’s been working great, I’m a fan of the framework myself, the whole “we love your art, keep doing it and stop doing other shit” concept has a nice honesty about it.
I wish I had discovered Mutants and Masterminds long ago because of how amazingly adaptable it is.
There are lots of similar open sort of “here’s a general rule structure and mechanics that work within it, here’s how to work with them, here’s how to break them, have fun” rulesets out there to crib from for providing a usable framework so you can put in the fun stuff which lets us more easily jump in and play around within the wonderful worlds you build. Love the idea even though I don’t game nearly as much as I used to, having the stuff codified is always fun to nerd over.
I love how you’re offering exactly as I would hope to ask without saying a word. Very few in the void are so helpful.
Please keep the Patreon simple for your sanity. Maybe give higher level supports early access or original art scraps or something, but that’s it.
I recommend that you use Kickstarter or other crowdfunding for additional big projects (e.g. graphic novel) to raise a bunch of money at once to cover printing costs, etc.
Also, unless it’s your dream to design an RPG, don’t. Maybe partner with an experienced designer to create a new system if you feel nothing out there works or create system-neutral setting material or even material for an existing rule-set (Fate, AW, etc.). You say “no promise on the quality of the rules”, but do you really want your wonderful art and story associated with something that’s just “ok” at best?
Finally, keep up the great work! This is my favorite thing on the web right now! Put out a Patreon and I’m a day one backer just to keep you drawing this.
The extra stuff I do will never be printed most likely unless I kickstart it and will only be available in online formats. The RPG stuff is mostly just to get setting fluff in a form that people can mess with it. I’m pretty sure the rules will work ok though.
And yeah, aside from that, the Patreon will be about 80% ‘Make me draw this comic full time”
Someone would fancy K6BD RPG session through Skype when rules come out 😉 ?
I will certainly patronize your Patreon as soon as it goes live. As for the RPG stuff, might I recommend a wholly system-neutral setting bible to make it as broadly useful as possible? Failing that, I’d just about kill for a Fate adaptation or something *very* loosely based on PbtA (like John Harper’s new Blades in the Dark ruleset). I know there’s at least some interest in the Fate community to see KSBD done up for the system…
I’m curious about how you plan on (if you’re going to) incorporate all the cool lore and stories that you’ve written as side notes or in place of the comics themselves.
They give such an awesome depth and scope to the comic, it would be a shame to not have them in the published comic.
I would pay money to have this page in poster format.
I’ll be waiting to support you on Patreon.
I wish the Cypher System was open-source, Numenera or The Strange sounds perfect for a k6bd RPG.
This is like the best palladium game possible so go for the RPG stuff, please.
moving forward to another country is not that easy as we think…
