Wielder of Names 3-58
Chapter: 3
“The angel is a mighty judge, for his gavel is a fist of stone encasing a terrible and unforgiving fire. A corpse-ocean of criminals have been fed to that flame, yet oceans more shall never quell its unrelenting hunger.”
-15 Ways of Ruling
Maybe if White Chain phrased this as “Does nobody else feel the fire of Will burning inside them?” 82 would get better results. After all, humans are not the only creatures with souls.
Am angel’s will was hammered and forged into a specific desire to uphold the law and order of Throne. What the average angel wants is very different from what mortal races like humans would desire.
No, it wasn’t. Every angel had the Law beaten into them, yet this does not mean that is all that they desire. Aeons are not automata. They, as a group desire the return of Throne–yet those before us will not act on it. They would rather mock those who propose changing what is. Toppling the seven Demiurges, and replacing them with someone who can be bothered to want something better for the universe will certainly improve the state of Throne. It was not the presence of angels or gods which caused the healing powers of the water, for it still healed while there were men who did not rule present.
An angel’s soul is a cold flame. It does not burn the way a great crimson flame burns out a forest, it burns the way a blue flame persists on a layer of oil, refusing to yield but not rearing up either.
A cold flame is still a flame. All parts of YSUN have Will burning within them.
Further, you describe the Servants’ flame. The Aeon’s flame was “far too rigid, and moreover, it burned with a fierce and terrible cold.”
Aha! Methinks His/Her gavel will surely swing on judgement on the cold stasis of their siblings soon enough.
if not judgement, then an effective rebuke at least.

REBUKE IS A NICE WORD FOR AGGRESSIVE VERBAL RETALIATION.
These angels are as Alison’s sorority sisters are: Individual, judgmental generally well meaning, but completely useless.
Much of the multiverse’s nature can be explained, if one thinks of it as an endlessly repeating, infinitely reoccurring series of fraternities and sororities, with all of one’s lifetime being Pledge Week.
Time! An endless wheel! Ia! Ia!
I guess White Chain will soon realize that only the Thorns are following the Prophecy. They will soon realize that only the Thorns are actually fighting for something. The other angels are all cowards and alienated.
All hail to the Royalists! Metatron lives!
Walk with the Thorns, White Chain, accomplish the Prophecy and save our Rising King !
This entire scene reminds me of when Allison returned home to steel herself for the trials to come.
And this black flames and white voids is why I never stay to long with my brothers on either extremes. It is especially trying when I have to actually talk to them for prolonged periods, having to socialize with YISUN more exotic creations for decades at a time before they even talk to me like a peer. Much easier to commune with does who accept the new flesh and let go some of old creations restrictive taboos and laws and allow themselves actual joy, passion, and deep emotions like the great want.
Looks like 83 might have made a decision at the end there.
I’m really starting to wonder what the mechanism for returning actually is. Is it just a matter of rekindling one’s flame enough to stop arguing and just go back (through that archway, presumably)?
Just as the Law is still and immutable, those it resides within must be active and moving.
These angels are great, just like all groups of wise, flippant and judgmental people are. I hope we get a lot more of them in the future!
LOVE THE HAIRSTYLE! and is there any lucifer in this world? maybe white chain could change sides with their help, lucifer was the rebel one right?
A demon is not a fallen angel. To have heard White Chain at the Concordance before their banishment you would think the Thorns are “fallen” as much as a human would think so. But the only fallen among the angels are our Prime brothers awaiting reincarnation.
The demons are a different story. It is said that their ruler lives in an Ebon sarcophagus, too powerful to even walk freely. The great Ebon Devil known only as Himself.
(In real world theology this is mostly true as well. Demons weren’t originally fallen angels, but a different class of immortal whose duty was to purge the impure and tempt people to wickedness as a trial. Satan/Samael was heaven’s prosecutor)
Who knows, perhaps White Chain *is* the Lucifer of this world.
Angels are slow to learn. Give them another handful of eons and they’ll come around. In time, everyone learns that the burning will inside every being is the same, whatever their shape. It is the fortune and flaw of angels that their immutability makes it take so long to see things from a different perspective.
How sad, the angels are so obsessed with upholding the law they have completely forgotten WHY praytell said law exists.
Angels cannot be living creatures AND non-living machines all at once, their quest for perfection is folly.
You are thinking of human law. These angels serve natural law. It does not exist for a reason, it just exists. Ask not why a rock falls, gravity does not care.
Yet their law does have purpose (although i agree, they seve naural law). Indeed, the Angels’ creation was for a singular purpose. They were to prevent the Servants from rebelling, and upon the creation of Humans, their duties likely expanded to controlling Humans as well.
The more we hang about with angels, the more I liken their voices ta’ a chorus o’ stuffy old British nobs.
On the other hand, they could just as easily sound like the cast members of “Cheers”
So the angels first and foremost flaw presents itself.
The strongest of steels shatter on the first swing, it is in softness that the blade cuts deep and stays whole.
Immutable and eternal. Yet easily ‘corrupted’ by time away from the Void. What a curious pair of views to hold alongside one another.
My brethren here should spend less time in the void contemplating, and more in the world, listening. Knowledge does not imply wisdom, but it is a necessary ingredient in its creation. Time and thought alone cannot create it.
Red Word fears that which he reflects. In more ways than one.
As well, our dear White Chain seems to have decided these few are useless. I wonder of forging one’s own path comes with a change in appearance, as following the Thorns does.
Ah, Red Word. How very like a mirror to be so poor at self-reflection. Though I might have expected Ragged Edge to have a better head on his shoulders, haha.
Like all angels, our intrepid White Chain bears her nature and how many times she’s been Willing to die for it as her Name, and in both she quite outstrips her assembled brothers. I feel these stodgy old wisps are about to receive an object lesson in Returning to Subdue Evil.
Too many times do we humans push aside burning passion on account of laziness. Too many times do we humans push aside positive change and growth for complacency. It appears to me that angels have these same faults immortally. Even now they attempt to hush the single voice calling for a rebellion of comfort in order to protect the one thing they swore to uphold. For, surely, if the world is brought to ruins, what law will there be to uphold?
12 Questioning Fate remains a favorite; such a kind spoken rhombicuboctahedron. Though the most loud spoken voices are rather unsympathetic 52 Holy Mists Rising From the Abyss, 10 Vigilant Gaze Purges the Horizon, and 38 Dark Spear of Thought Will Plunge Into the Flesh of Heretics at least seem concerned with White Chain’s well being.
I wonder if White Chain will encounter Alison on the road, or if they will be given form again, either as a beater in the hunt for the heir to throne, or as a reluctant hunter.
The mask in the mirror rather reminds me of a certain Mysterious Stranger from the claymation Adventures of Mark Twain. That element of their aspect, anyway. They’re quite a bit more forceful in their words than the Stranger.
“Angels are like soldiers. Simple minded, straightforward machines made for one, and only one purpose. When it starts to think, to denied, to explore, it’s stops being angel and grow into something beautiful. So sad it lives so short and always forgets.”
Serda Tenretni, Fallen Geas Knight
Not ALL humans….
“I can say that, my friend is human!”
Methinks the dark blue angel is self conscious on their near human appearance.
*Sigh* The old won’t get it.
