Wow, the mouseover text here is surprisingly powerful. The moment itself already hits pretty hard, but then you mouse over and the full force of that- the power of it, the despair- all hits you at once.
Is anyone else reminded of that time Ys-Aesma got supermad at that dude she had a crush on? I feel there was an important lesson there. Well, two important lessons, but I’m not talking about the one about the preferability of dogs.
All the usurpers thus far have had some catastrophic flaw in their world view (not sure exactly what Gog-Agog’s is as they are just… Gog-Agog). I suspect Jadis is no different, and that her flaw is that she doesn’t believe there can be a flaw in her world view.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned before, but “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang (AKA the short story Arrival is based on) should be required reading for Jadis and Allison.
If the universe is preordained, and one were to learn all that was, all that is, all that will be, would there be an escape ? A way to cut the wheel, to cut its very turning ?
Would omniscience lead to freedom ? In the reactionary defiance of what is assured to happen ? Or would it lead to a loop, a wheel of one’s own ? A discovery of the results of those attempts at defiance only ended, only broken by an acceptance in despair ? By submission to causality ?
To achieve royalty, to cut would one need to ignore that knowledge ? To have absent from one’s mind the very notion that such knowledge could even exist ?
Would then ignorance and idiocy make royalty easier ?
But then, one would not understand what they cut, they would not understand royalty, making their very motion fruitless.
That would be a paradox.
I did once make a point to someone (self-professedly) clinging to Existentialism that even in Determinism you don’t know *which* choice you’re going to make until it happens and that which choice you make determines what comes after, and is thus meaningful to *you* at least.
Omniscience would seem to counteract that.
It’s a cruel irony that we seek knowledge in order to make better, literally more informed choices, but if we were ever to gain perfect knowledge, we would cease to make choices. It’s a good example of how human nature is not fit to function in certain new extremes, since we have never been subjected to the selective pressure from those extremes. The puddle that is frozen and cast upon the mountain’s peak will slip and fall and break asunder. Only after it melts and flows back to the valley can it reform.
Just because there is no point in anything I do, doesn’t mean that I won’t do it.
Life is meaningless and pointless, so you might as well do something enjoyable and awesome with it. I think that is the point of Nietzche
But of course, if nothing has a point, then all has an equal point, and thus all points are equally important.
Hence, also, *everything* has a point.
And so the quesrion becones meaningless..
Far better to choose your own meaning, I think.
…I think her Omniscience isn’t perfect, but not just because it shows her one way of things. Her key is literally ‘Mind’ – and it may have the same weaknesses, including adherence to established picture of it’s wielder.
It’s very well may be that Jadis never seen any other picture, because she got it already believing in determinsm and never really decided to try and change it, exeplifying True Sin of Sloth.
So like, each Demiurge has some big flaw holding them back, and I guess Jadis’s is sloth through her belief in pre-determined causality?
I feel there’s a big difference between perceiving/understanding all existence, and bending existence to your will. Like knowing how to read but not to write.
Is it really all about knowing what’s going to happen, when you can conceivably be powerful enough to manage causality/existence through your sheer will?
“Nothing… right, got it. So… do you see us hooking up in the future?”
“I’m sorry?”
“You know, my girlfriend has been dead for three years, it’s probably high time that I moved on. And you’re there with like… a huge cleavage and a dress that’s so off the shoulders, it’s almost falling to the floor. So-”
“You’re not taking this seriously.”
“You don’t know that!”
“Yes, I do.”
“Oh right.”
“But to answer your questions: no, we won’t.”
“Damn.”
“At least not for the next five years.”
“Wait, what?”
A foolish sentiment, for everything is a lie and nothing is true. To believe that the future can not be changed, one must first believe that reality exists.
Pft, okay that’s just boring. next please! I do jest of course, I knew this already. What she doesn’t see is the other part of it- which is EVERYTHING.
And yet, Jadis herself seemed alarmed as recently as when Allison unexpectedly(?) tried to get out of bed unaided. How can Jadis be aware of every impending twitch of Allison’s finger, yet be surprised by any of her actions?
As someone who just rewatched their highschool graduation speech- being able to see something coming doesn’t spare you from the pain (or cringe) of it.
15 Guards the Darkest Depths and Recites History to the Shores
In the script she is surprised. I don’t think Jadis has control of her actions anymore. She’s a puppet being controlled by her perception of The Shape.
Nothing is a MU koan, that answer may be more oblique than it appears.
Also, is she getting ready to sit in that chair? Roh-roh.
Ro Res! Nuh Ruh Ro! Rallison reeds ra ruuurth, raggy!
man she really hyped these plants up too much

Does anyone know what Abbadon said about when the next update after this one is coming out? I’m not on his Paterson (fake fan, I know)

Nothing repeats.
This is axiomatic
“Omniscience showed me all my actions are for nothing so I decided to become a hikineet”
Jadis’ light novel would be a total hit.

I wonder how many pages until Blue experiences surprise.
My guess is 9.

“Brows furrowed in melancholy, they were as paintstrokes upon a canvas of snow.
She was as beautiful as the last smile of a dying parent, trying to comfort her children.
Our prophet, the saddest whore of the wheel there ever were.”
Jadis is awfully smiley about all this.

And that is why she’s sloth
Are those Koi carp details on the fabric of that Kimono? My! Preem Jadis must have a masterful tailor!
